Reading is the best thing we can do for ourselves. As the saying goes, “Reading makes a full Man, Meditation a profound Man, discourse a clear Man.” The more you read, the more you know and the smarter you grow. However, it has been found that Malaysians do not read enough. With the existence of television and the advancement of computers with the internet, books have been ignored. The young today prefers to sit in front of the television or surfing the internet. Apart from that, students do not read beyond the school text books. And most of them think that by just studying, they can get through exams. In fact, a lot has been written about the benefits of reading especially to children. Among them are bringing us the latest information, helping us to rest and relax and improving our language.
The main benefit of reading is that it provides us the latest information. We read the daily newspaper to know about the events that occur worldwide. This way the continents can keep in touch with one another and this enables them to request or provide assistance when catastrophe occurs. For instance, the recent devastating tsunami in Japan has many countries sending assistance immediately after it happened. Without the newspaper, the loss of human lives would have been much higher if the other countries had known about the fate of their neighbour days later.
Another of the many benefits of reading is that it helps us to rest and relax. “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy”. This saying is very true. Therefore, we must always take time off to rest and relax. Reading fiction materials are one of the ways to provide enjoyment to the reader. For example, the beauty and rhythm of the language in a book has the ability to calm and relax us. When we relax appropriately, we relieve stress from our daily lives. Thus our health also improves.
