Reaction paper on 'Miracle at Cell No. 7'
The “Miracle in Cell No. 7” is a story about a mentally challenged (with an intelligence of a child) father and his daughter. Her father gets wrongly accused because of the corrupt court and ends up getting in jail in cell no. 7 where he becomes friends with his cellmates. At first they didn’t like him but as soon they got to spend time with him they realize that he is actually innocent. What’s sad about this movie is that he was up against the commissioner because it was his daughter that died. But with his daughter’s determination she goes into the prison just to be with her father even though it is wrong. The movie is very heartwarming and teaches us about family values, especially the relationship of a father and a daughter. It also shows us that in reality our justice systems can be corrupt and biased, especially when you are up against someone who very powerful and rich you can’t do anything. I think it is because money talks right now. We can’t change people anymore.

At the start of the movie the father and daughter are both watching and dancing to the sailor moon song. They are even looking at the bag Yea-Seong wanted and Yong-Gu promises he will buy it to her tomorrow because it’s his payday. But a customer already bought so they rush inside and try to plead to give it back. The father of the little girl who has the bag beats up Yong-Gu even though the song of sailor moon was playing ironically at the background. The lyrics when you translate it are “For love and justice, the pretty soldier in a sailor suit, Sailormoon! In the name of the moon, I’ll punish you!”. As the story progresses (actually we can see this at the first part already and find out that she’s the daughter of Yong-Gu) in the future Yea-Seong became a lawyer and did everything she can to help her father. She even looked for the friends or cellmates her father and her befriended while in prison and asked them to be witnesses for the case even though it has been so many years already and that he is already dead and the court has already dismissed his case. In a part where she was getting her fortune told she recognizes the daughter of the assistant. Here we can see that she is rebellious and ‘gangster’ like. She even rudely asks for allowance from her dad. This is mostly the “stereotype” effect to children whose parents or parent get imprisoned. What I like about the movie is that Yong-Gu’s cellmates help him with smuggling his daughter inside even though it’s bad. What touched and me cry is the part during her birthday celebration and that it was also the day Yong-Gu, her father would be sentenced to death, instead of them being happy. She even finally got the Sailormoon bag she wanted. When the police already took her father away it so hard for them to part and they even kept on saying goodbye to each other. Later on while watching, we find out the chief in the prison where her father was held found out that the daughter of the commissioner died not because of murder. He investigated because he knows that Yong-Gu is really a nice and sincere man after he saved him during a fire in prison. The cause is she slipped on ice and she wasn’t able to support herself because of the bag. Which is why she broke the back of her head that ironically caused her death. The reason she has a scar on her forehead is because of a brick fell on her. Also as it turns out Yong-Gu was giving CPR to her and unzipped her pants to give her more circulation of blood, as what he has learned. But during the court session the lawyer assigned didn’t do anything at all. Though at the end they finally see that Yong-Gu was indeed an innocent man. The court especially the commissioner really took advantage of Yong-Gu’s disability. I think he was just looking for someone to blame too.

The government should really investigate more on a person’s behavior too along with the case rather than just assuming and just going straight to the point. But it is really hard especially of you don’t have any money and the person you are up against has money and even has many connections. They also shouldn’t just judge a person right away. We also need more policemen like the chief in the movie. Not just the people in the government who are corrupt even the people who will give us justice too are. They are corrupt because they are blinded by money and are scared of the people above them. But all governments are corrupt but at least the others still do something to help the people but it is only in the Philippines who don’t do anything to help the people.

“No man is an island” --- an almost clichéd saying everyone knows. I can’t completely say I’m an island, I can’t say I’m not either. It usually depends upon the situations raised by life’s unique design. I was brought up by my parents to be a respectful, justice-wise, humble person. But in every person’s lives lies the process of making one’s own personality.…

In this collection of reading, I learnt about where human rights is really needed for and how it is not being utilized sometimes as per the need, it should be used at the places where there is a real need for it. Human rights is not someone’s product. Those who usually stands for the human rights were not welcomed in society in those days, like Mr. Lou Henkin. And those who have been really denied human rights will know the value of human rights and it does make much sense to them. It is not that we do not need human rights today just because we have democracy, there are many things which still needs to be solved with the help of human rights.1…

A symposium and forum concerning the Jalaur River Multipurpose Project was conducted last December 7, 2012 at the CFOS AV-Hall. This event was made successful thru the combined efforts of the UP Oikos and the Jalaur River for the People Movement. Mrs. Cynthia Deduro, a protector of the indigenous people in Panay tackled this rising dilemma and pointed out the various disadvantages this project might cause specifically the deterioration of the natives’ livelihood and destruction of the environment. It was Sen. Franklin Drilon who pushed this project to the Congress purposely indicating the benefits the people of Panay can acquire. The project aims to “sustain the region’s self-sufficiency and contribute to the annual increase in the country’s rice production. It will provide a year-round irrigation for agricultural production; obtain a hydroelectric power plant to supplement the power supply in the province, boost the supply of potable water throughout the province, and to promote eco-tourism. These benefits, however, may not be advantageous at all. It can cause total damnation to the people thru dislocation of communities, dangerous fault line, flooding, soil movements, worsening debt, and human rights violations.…

The subject and language required to be used here in the Philippines is Filipino which we consider good for the education in our country. From elementary to college, Tagalog or Filipino as a language and a subject were introduced. Recently, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announced that they will be removing obligatory Filipino subjects taught in college. The scrapping of Filipino subjects was then opposed by different members of the society which includes students and teachers. They, who comprise professors and students from different universities and colleges, who are against the removal of Filipino subject in the tertiary level already created a coalition which they called Defenders of the Filipino Language Alliance, which according to them is in order to maintain the Filipino subject in college and have a nationalistic education in our country.…

In Albert Camus’s The Stranger, he shares with the reader, the life of an immensely complicated character. The story is presented to the reader by the character himself in most of the story. The character’s name is Meursault, a detached and semi-normal shipping clerk. Meursault appears to be rather stoic and is devoid of emotions. Meursault remains unaffected by passion and emotions throughout the story: however as the story progress towards the end Meursault is showing some feelings. Camus’s The Stranger is an example of existentialism and includes absurdism, as well as stoicism, some nihilism, and some naturalism and he shares with the reader examples of the aforementioned in almost every part of the story.…

Reaction Paper on Stem Cell Ibilola Aridegbe Coun502 Dr. Marcia Wiinamaki 01/27/2009 Human existence begins at conception Abstract The purpose of this research includes a brief overview of information found through Intoduction Stem cell research has brought about heated debate among academics and society as a whole. Especially among Christian circles. Embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilized in vitro or at an in vitro fertilization clinic which are then donated for research purposes with informed consent of the donors. They are not derived from eggs fertilized in a woman 's body contrary to the belief of some. The pros and cons of stem cell research come to the surface when we examine source of stem cells - embryonic cells. Embryonic stem cells are extracted directly from an embryo before the embryo 's cells begin to differentiate. At this stage the embryo is referred to as a "blastocyst." There are about 100 cells in a blastocyst, a very large percentage of which are stem cells, which can be kept alive indefinitely, grown in cultures, where the stem cells continue to double in number every 2-3 days. A replicating set of stem cells from a single blastocyst is called a "stem cell line" because the genetic material all comes from the same fertilized human egg that started it. The embryos from which human embryonic stem cells are harvested are typically four or five days old and are a hollow microscopic ball of cells called the blastocyst. The blastocyst includes three structures: the trophoblast, which is the layer of cells that surrounds the blastocyst; the blastocoel, which is the hollow cavity inside the blastocyst; and the inner cell mass, which is a group of approximately 30 cells at one end of the blastocoel. Those who value human life from the point of conception, oppose embryonic stem cell research because the extraction of stem cells from this type of an embryo requires its destruction. In other…
