A REACTION PAPER IN SOCIAL SCIENCE 26

A symposium and forum concerning the Jalaur River Multipurpose Project was conducted last December 7, 2012 at the CFOS AV-Hall. This event was made successful thru the combined efforts of the UP Oikos and the Jalaur River for the People Movement. Mrs. Cynthia Deduro, a protector of the indigenous people in Panay tackled this rising dilemma and pointed out the various disadvantages this project might cause specifically the deterioration of the natives’ livelihood and destruction of the environment. It was Sen. Franklin Drilon who pushed this project to the Congress purposely indicating the benefits the people of Panay can acquire. The project aims to “sustain the region’s self-sufficiency and contribute to the annual increase in the country’s rice production. It will provide a year-round irrigation for agricultural production; obtain a hydroelectric power plant to supplement the power supply in the province, boost the supply of potable water throughout the province, and to promote eco-tourism. These benefits, however, may not be advantageous at all. It can cause total damnation to the people thru dislocation of communities, dangerous fault line, flooding, soil movements, worsening debt, and human rights violations.

I appreciate the administration for thinking this plan which may be beneficial to the populace. However, it saddens me how can the government propose this project if it will be worthless after how many years? It is too ridiculous how these “hope of the people” spend too much on a dam which will be destroyed in an earthquake hit. The people’s safety should be the top priority of these officers but how come they attend to their own needs first? Yes, indeed, it has advantages but these are being overwhelmed by the great number of disadvantages. The natives will be helpless if this project will be constructed for they will lose their valued homes and agricultural livelihood.

As we enter the hall of the National Museum of the Philippines, the prominence of "Spoliarium" an oil on poplar completed in 1884 by National Artist, Juan Luna, is remarkable. The super- sized painting depicts a dark hollow beneath the Roman arena referred to as the Spoliarium where the bodies of slain gladiators are being dragged away for disposal. This is the time in history when the Romans travelled to Europe and collected slaves, otherwise known as the Vikings, to entertain other people in Rome. The Romans created the “Viking Games” where Vikings were forced by Romans to battle lions, tigers and against themselves in an arena. It strikes me as extremely violent, bloody and inhuman. The slaves have no other choice than to fight and kill in order for them to survive. The purpose of the Spoliarium was to “spoil” the dead bodies of the gladiators by exposing them to birds or any creature that eats human flesh. In the right side of the picture you will see an old lady waiting for the corpse of her loved one and an old man searching for the body of his son. The distress is palpable.…

Corruption among officials involved with the project have endangered and killed people because of the poor construction. In the city of Chongqing a steel bridge collapsed killed 40 people. Also, the Chinese aren’t concerned about the affects it will have on the people, by building the dam. In addition, during the construction of the dam, Chinese officials promised people who had to more from their homes, cash compensation and new homes. However, many families complained that much, in some cases most, of the compensation due to them, has been siphoned off by corrupt local bureaucrats.…

My name is Arica O’Quinn and I am currently a freshman at Missouri State University. In taking my second sociology class it has been brought to my attention how many social problems we have every day in America that are being ignored and tossed to the side while the government is pre-occupied with small, petty agendas that are not worth your time, or my tax dollars. One issue in particular I would like to address you is the issue of environmental problems. Yes we have other problems like the drug culture, family violence and abuse, and discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation but none of those will matter in five years if we don’t even have a healthy, safe environment to live in. Some things that tend to bother me about this certain social problem is the lack of effort and the lack of public knowledge about how fast and rapidly our environment is going downhill. Our landfills are growing at an unacceptable rate while need to make more and more just to keep all of the trash contained into a certain area. This is a social issue because the longer we go on destroying the earth we live on the less time we, our children, and grandchildren have enjoying God’s creation. Not to mention who do you think is going to be continuing on in our footsteps? That’s right- our children and grandchildren and do we really want them growing up thinking its okay to trash our environment and not bothering to do their part in maintaining and building a healthier, safer environment? Its been proven over and over that children learn from their parents in simply watching and then repeating the elders action. Currently we are showing today’s youth that this is a “throw away” world. There can be many steps that can take place to ensure that the future of our country is educated. To start off with, an action Missouri State University is taking is that next to every trashcan is a plastic and paper-recycling bin. Why not press this to being in every school or…

Evolution a dove film created by Tim Piper, the author takes a unique perspective on how the social media defines beauty. The question is how do we perceive what’s beautiful and what really means to us. The definition of beauty or beautiful according to the (1) oxford dictionary is: 1 [mass noun] a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight: [as: modifier] denoting something intended to make someone more attractive: beauty treatment.…

Discussing the example with the stepmother going through her stepson’s phone made me think a lot about where the line between respecting your children, but at the same time looking out for them is drawn. Growing up my parents has had very different ways to go about this line. My dad has always been very clear with rules, and what’s wrong and right and such, but he also left a lot of space for us to experience and learn from our mistakes. While my mom was more the kind who wanted to stop us from making them in the first place, which sometimes can be very overwhelming, because that where the boundaries of personal space can be blurred. I remember that I would go mental if she read my text messages, or a letter that was for me, or if she even moved an object in my room, at a very young age. And we would have fights where she would claim that it is her right as a parent to know what is going on, not matter how old I am. But now that I am older I find that I wouldn’t be mad if she did these things, I would be sad and disappointed. But in my case I don’t have anything to hide, while in the stepson’s case he is actually proving her right in her checking up him, because his actions are those of someone irresponsible, although the stepmother’s actions are of someone who is being disrespectful. That is what makes this particular situation so hard. I remember going through something similar with my little sister, because I tend to be a little too overprotected of her and I worried what she might be influenced to do, simply because I know how hard the “teen world” can be. So this one time I dropped her off at the dentist office, she asked me to hold on to her phone for her, and my curiosity got the best of me. I read through her texts and actually found a text of about her pretending to be our father saying that she was too sick to come take her test and that he would send her with a…

There has been a very heated debate concerning abortion in the current world we live in. Do we or do we not kill a human being, an organism? That is basically the question everyone asks and each person has their own answer. Personally, I think abortion is tantamount to murder. Once a sperm and an egg cell unite, an organism is formed and its DNA fuses and its entire genetic make-up is written for the organism, in this case, the human zygote to live out. In that short amount of time, an organism is made and is considered alive, an identity is synthesized and, in the future, an entity will be embodied. In the news article, a young couple illegally went through the process of abortion without a registered physician and proper materials and tools. They bought a drug that is not safe for pregnant women to use for the girl to take and that ended up killing their 4-month old child. Her boyfriend had to physically extract the body of the dead child out of the mother. After the procedure, the girl had some complications and was brought to the hospital for doctors and police to find out. This tells me that only God has the power to create and destroy life and as human beings, we are in no power to play the role of God and choose who lives and who dies. Once we try to tamper with life, our life takes the toll.…

In the Philippines, watersheds play a vital role of supplying agricultural, domestic, and industrial water especially to the urban population of Metro Manila. Such dependence led to the framing of the Laiban Dam Project, seeking to inundate the ecologically-fit Sierra Madre share of Tanay in Rizal where at least 4,413 families of indigenous Dumagats and Remontados find more than home in such grounds they contend as their heritage. Upon dealing with such conflicts and other downstream consequences, this research study attempts to analyze relevant information regarding costs and expenses, land sustainability, probable risks, ecological factors, ethical considerations, and the existence of feasible alternatives and conservation measures which would prevent the construction of Laiban Dam. Keywords: dam project, indigenous people, water crisis, sustainable development, downstream consequences, environmental hazards, ancestral domain, dam alternatives Discussion The existence of dams has undeniably been beneficial in sustaining the looming necessities of humanity by fulfilling the purposes of, but is not limited to,…

The “Greater Common Good” is an non-fiction essay by Booker- Prize winning author Arundhati Roy.The essay was written in 1999 surrounding the construction of Sardar Sarovar Dam as part of the Narmada Valley Project. The essay grew out of the author’s involvement in fighting the construction of Narmada river dams.In this essay, the author tries to address the ramifications of the so called “Big Projects” taken up in the name of development, specifically the construction of dams, their environmental and more importantly the social and cultural impact of the people directly affected(in a seemingly negative way) due to these projects.…
