West Nile Virus
I’m Nelson and I live in Africa. It was around dusk when I was outside playing with my friends when I was bitten by a mosquito. After a while when I got in the house I started getting a major headache. My mother checked my temperature and said that I had a high fever. She gave me some medicine and put me to bed hoping it would be broken by tomorrow. The next day I woke up and my fever wasn’t gone but I seemed like It got worsen and my muscles felt very weak and I could barely move. That’s when my mother rushed me to the hospital. The Doctor diagnosed me with something called West Nile Virus. He told my mother that it was no specific treatment for this virus other than supportive therapy (such as hospitalization, intravenous fluid, and respiratory support for severe cases. He also told me that I got it by getting bite by a mosquito. Mosquito become infected by biting birds that harbor the virus. The Good news is that I didn’t have any side effects from any of my treatments. After about a week I was good enough to leave the hospital and go home. The doctor said I was lucky no to have a serve case because I could have been sick for several weeks or even could have died. So for all my fellow kids to prevent yourself from getting this disease try to stay indoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active, tell your parents to use screen doors and windows to keep the bugs out, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants whenever your outdoors, and if you apply insect repellent to exposed skin, do so sparingly. I do all these things now so I can stay West Nile Virus free [continues]
