Random Student Locker Searches without Permission

      A locker search is simply the act of opening a locker and looking through its content. Depending on the states administration may choose to search one, several or all lockers. The search begins when a teacher or student reports concern of what another student may or may not have in their locker, or when an administrator call for a random locker search.

      As a teacher my responsibilities about random student locker searches without permission is to do it. For what I know it’s legal to search a student’s locker. The schools are the ones who own the lockers and they have that right. If the school has reasonable suspicion for a random locker searches they can search. If you look in the hand book its there. A student and their parents know this. A student shouldn’t have anything in their locker that doesn’t belong, or is illegal or will harm another student or a faculty. As a teacher it’s not my place to search a student’s locker but someone in higher authority.

If another student told me that they saw another student with a knife and they put it in their locker, and I chose to do nothing about it, I would be responsible for what that student does with that knife. I can’t limit a student’s right, but as a teacher I have to protect the safety of the school and the students in it.

Now if I believe that a search to a student locker was suspcion and their locker was search for no reason. Then I have the right to stand up for that student. But if I know something it’s my responsibility to report anything that is harmful or illegal to a principle. I will be putting my career on the line if I do nothing.

As a teacher I want to use my power responsibly and not abuse it by searching a locker just because I feel like something is wrong.
