The central idea of family importance is a relevant central idea which expresses itself for the duration of the play; which contributes to the hero development of Walter. The concept of family is extremely important to the Youngers, which is Walter’s family. One of the first times this central idea sprouts is when Mama, Walter and Ruth are discussing the abortion; Hansberry states, “When the world gets ugly enough a woman will do anything for her family. The part that’s already living.” (Act I, Scene II, Page 74). This quote shows the importance of family…

Walter has a big influence on this plot because he is the most upset about the news on the house and adds a lot of tension at the end of the scene. Walter shows that he is upset that Mama made a down payment on the house by saying, “You the head of this family. You run our lives like you want to.” This line shows that Walter is upset that Mama did not put the money towards…

It seems evident that the heroin in Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun is Lena Younger. Throughout the play, she's faced with an important decision to make; how to spend the 10,000 dollars. Instead of thinking selfishly, she tries to do what's best in the interest of the whole family. Lena Younger is the leader of the Younger household as well as the mother of Walter and Beneatha. She strains her family to have self-respect and to believe in themselves in order to accomplish their dreams. As time passed, Mama's fantasy of a house dwindled away into an improbable hope. A symbol of mama's small dream was her plant. It epitomizes the fading of the fantasy as a consequence of the refusal of a life outside the apartment. Coming from an older generation,…

“Eat your eggs”- In the story, as Walter was explaining to Ruth about his dream to own a liquor store; Ruth rejected him by telling him to eat his eggs. Through the heated conversation, Walter mentions how it was necessary for man to change his life but Ruth would just disregard him by telling him to “eat your eggs and go to work”. This shows how despite all the dreams that Walter has, Ruth does not support him in any way. Walter feels that Ruth is not very supportive and how she treats him always in the same, predictable way. (sparknotes.com) Mama’s Plant- Mama’s deep nurture toward the plant despite its lack of sunlight and energy on its appearance, symbolizes her care towards her family despite the poor condition they are living in. At the beginning of the story, Mama took great care of the plant even though it seems to be useless to other family members because of its lack of sunlight and its appearance already look very much worn out. However Mama knows that the plant will survive through the tough living condition it is in if she continues her deep nurture and care. She never gave up on the plant and puts great hope and care towards it. The way she treats the plant is like the way she nurtures her family in their fragile and rough living condition they are surviving in. Mama knows that just as how she takes great care of the plant and make it survive, she can do the same with her family too. In the end when all of her family are leaving for the new house, she took the plant instead of leaving it behind because she knows that with a better living condition the plant will thrive and blossom more just as how her family will too in the new house. The plant symbolizes hope, in which as Mama took the plant to the new house, it represents how her family will begin to succeed and thrive in their new living condition, a new beginning for them. Mama’s own…

Mama has stuck to her same values ever since she was a child. She is the oldest women in the apartment, and is the wisest. She controls the household at the beginning of the play but then hands her control down to Walter by giving him the rest of the insurance money. Mama is stuck to the values of blacks from when they were slaves back in the last 1800's. She is a woman who will never change those values, because she grew up with those values. She is a catholic woman with strict values in the household. It seems that when she was born, she may have been born a slave or the slaves were getting emancipated around that time. This upbringing causes her to have a very strict attitude in the play. When Beneatha says "there is no god" mama slapped beneatha and made her say "In my mother's house there is still God." This shows Mama's control on her kids and the household.…

Lena Younger, or “Mama,” is almost like a leader to the Younger family, for she is the one who looks after everyone. All she ever thought of is improving her family’s life conditions. Mama’s tender love and care towards the plant she owned exemplifies the desire of living in a better home fit for them and having her own garden. Proving how strongly religious she is, Mama slaps Beneatha after Beneatha proclaimed that there is no God. When Walter was at his lowest, Beneatha said that there was nothing left to love about him. Mama, however, claimed that a man should not be loved when he has “done good and made things easy for everybody,” but during his weakest time of need. The other members of the Youngers give high respect to Mama, and they think that she knows what’s best for the family. In one word, Lena is selfless.…
