In Lorraine Hansberry’s book, A Raisin In The Sun, portrays the life of the Youngers, an African-American family living on the South Side of Chicago in the 1950s. Throughout the story, they are seen as strong family going through many challenges in life. Lena (aka Mama) raises her family by summoning core beliefs upon which her life as a mother and a person has been founded. They manage to overcome some obstacles through their Mama’s encouragements and advice; however, at a point they reach their lowest points in life. Beneatha is twenty years old, attends college and is better educated than the rest of the Younger family. She dreams of becoming a doctor and struggles to determine her identity as a well-educated black woman; however, in act III she reaches low points when she over hears Bobo and Walter talking about how the money Walter has invested is gone. Beneatha is terribly depressed and cynical, knowing now that the money for her future education is also gone and that her future and her dreams are likely ruined. In the book, she says that “Me.., I’m nothing.. I wanted to do that.. It was a child’s reaction to the world..”. In page 107, Beneatha has a conversation with Asagai after she hears the conversion between Bobo and her brother, Walter, about the all the money being gone. Sad and depressed that the reality turned out differently from her dream, Beneatha gave up hope and the thought of becoming a doctor was also faded. Her confidence, determination, dedication, hard work and enthusiasm of becoming a doctor are all gone. She has now become depressed and given up her dream in life. Walter is a dreamer, who wants to be rich and devises plans to acquire wealth with his friends, mainly Willy Harris to invest his father’s insurance money in a new liquor store venture. In the book, he says that “Mama, it’s all divide up. Life is..Between the takers and the “token”.. I’ve figured it out finally”. In page 114, Walter is soul-crushed bottom when he found out...
