The Dabbawalas of Mumbai have already created a niche for themselves in the world today. What started off 120 years back as a meal delivery agents, today the Dabbawala system have become the “Foodline of Mumbai” by delivering lunch boxes all across Mumbai using the simplest of techniques and efficient use of public transport.
This assignment aims to bring in some creative thoughts and innovative ideas which could possibly create a radical change in the existing meal delivery system of the Dabbawalas.
OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
The Dabbawalas are already known for their most efficient logistics and supply chain process with a success rate of 99.999999% i,e 1 error in 16 million transactions. They have already achieved “Six Sigma” rating. The process can further be developed by adopting “Total Quality Management” procedures to have a “Zero-Error” delivery service which goes beyond the concept of “Six Sigma”. This can be achieved by sorting out the dabbas only once, and not multiple times.
CUSTOMER MANAGEMENT
The Dabbawalas already have a feature on their website for Online bookings and customer feedback. In order to increase the customer base, the Dabbawalas could introduce bookings through “Mobile phones” by providing a hot-line or a SMS booking facility. Also, regular and personal intercation with the clients would be of great value add to increase the efficiency of the Dabbawalas.
INNOVATION
Dinner Service : At present, the Dabbawalas provide services only for lunch delivery. One viable option is to extend this service to provinding dinner keeping in view the increasing number of workforce in the IT companies and BPO’s where many employees work late night. This would open up a totally new segment for the Dabbawalas who would now become the “Undisputed Kings of Meal Delivery”.
