Race and Your Community
Hispanic or Mexican American; are we a race or simply an ethnicity? The text books say Mexican Americans but job applications say White (Hispanic) or Latino. Most opinions are that Hispanics are not a race in the U.S. yet if you look around we are the majority of the South like in Texas, Arizona, the Southern part of California and New Mexico. According to the Census Bureau in Texas the population of Hispanic Origin is 23,385,340 and of that number 8,298,643 are Hispanic or Latino then 6,951,856 are Mexican. (2005-2007) From these big numbers of Hispanics I would like to tell you about the people in my city where I grew up in, San Antonio, Texas and where I currently live, Atlantic Beach, FL.
Being Hispanic just like me some of the greatest leaders worked hard here in San Antonio, TX like Cesar Chavez, who worked hard for Hispanic Farm workers civil rights. We now have the Cesar Chavez Foundation which helps Hispanics around the city and their mission a (501(c)(3)) non-profit charitable organization, is to maximize human potential to improve communities by preserving, promoting and applying the legacy and universal values of civil rights leader Cesar E. Chavez.(2008) Another Foundation which leaders in my community have supported is the South Texas Hispanic Fund and their mission is to make a difference in San Antonio and South Texas communities by expanding Hispanic involvement and charitable giving. (San Antonio Area Foundation, 2008) These foundations also help other people in San Antonio in other races and ethnicity not just Hispanics and treat everyone the same.
Unlike these leaders trying to make a difference, there can be some people who despite the fact that throughout history we have come a long way to give equal rights to everyone; can be ignorant. There are some people in my community that treat other... [continues]
