Annotation: An act of contrition should be a personal matter. In Wodehouse’s quote he gives an assertion about apologies. He states that they are unnecessary because the “right sort of people” does not want them and the “wrong sort” takes an advantage of them. The deeper meaning lies in why one shouldn’t apologize to people and this is why an act of contrition should be on a personal matter; to avoid unnecessary conflict. When negative stuff happens all one needs to do is confess to oneself to eliminate the problem. This is where Wilde’s quote is apparent. Wilde describes that when one has feelings bottled up inside, one needs to let go of them or write it out to oneself. The action will leave one with “absolution”. He tells that it is self-gratifying to blame oneself instead of others blaming you. He states that “no one has the right to blame us” when we blame ourselves.
