Insomnia can be caused by medication, herbs or caffeine, stressful life events can also be a contributing factor to insomnia, anxiety can also be a reason but if the anxiety is caused by a long history of insomnia than anxiety is not the problem, the underlying cause may be the key to discovering the reason for insomnia. Physical pain can sometimes be a cause of insomnia as well. Mental problems can also be a possibility. There are three basic types of insomnia, which include, transient insomnia, which lasts for a few nights, short term insomnia which usually means two or four weeks of poor sleep and chronic insomnia which causes a month or more of sleepless nights. Another sleep disorder is narcolepsy. Narcoleptics can sleep for twelve hours at a stretch but will still feel an irresistible urge to sleep once they are awake. People with nacrolepsy tend to fall asleep anywhere and everywhere(while driving, eating at work, even while talking. These “sleep attacks” lasts for thirty seconds to thirty minutes or more and nacroleptics may also experience limpness of muscles all over their bodies when it happens. Nacrolepsy is a chronic illness, which affects the part of the brain, which controls the regulation of sleep and wakefulness. Sleep walking or Somnambulism is a series of complex behaviors that are initiated during sleep and result in walking during sleep. It is usually very difficult waking the patient during an episode and amnesia immediately follows after awakening. Sleepwalking can occur in varying frequency and can be harmful at times. It is best to try relaxation techniques before falling asleep, remove anything from the bedroom which can be hazardous or harmful, .get plenty of rest. Because strees often triggers sleepwalking, hypnosis can be helpful at times for both children and adults, an accurate psychiatric evaluation and proper medication can also help control the symptoms of sleepwalking.

This article, “Relationship between call light use and response time and inpatient falls in acute care settings”, focused on three main points of interest. The first was the use of call lights from inpatients and their families. The second was the nurses’ response time to the call light. Finally, the third was the amount of inpatient falls that occurred. The goal of the study was to determine whether the call light use rate and the average call light response time contributed to the fall and injurious fall rates in acute care settings. The study was conducted in a Michigan community hospital and used archived hospital data for analyses for the period from February 2007 to June 2008. The unit of analysis was unit-week. The results of the study were as follows: more calls for assistance were related to less fall-related harm, longer response time to call lights related to fewer total falls and less fall-related patient harm, and more call light use related to longer response times (3333). So, in conclusion, this study challenged the idea that call lights should be used less or responded to faster.…

They usually work closely with doctors and can perform many high-level primary care tasks. They often specialize in specific types of practice such as pediatrics, psychiatry, or obstetrics. Some establish private practices; however, most work in doctors' offices, hospitals, or neighborhood health centers. Their duties often include taking detailed medical histories and performing complete physical exams, providing diagnoses and recommending treatment plans, treating common medical conditions, illnesses, and injuries, prescribing limited medications, and counseling patients and families. They also care for patients with chronic diseases, order and interpret lab tests and x-rays as needed, and provide health maintenance, health education and prevention for children and adults, and provide prenatal care and family planning.…

Nursing has evolved so much from its original intent. Nurses progressed from being classified as disorderlies to a well respected name in the health profession. However, even though nursing has come a long way, there are still more changes to come in relation to the shift of focus of healthcare from acute care to community health. As the US population continues to become diversified, nursing too will require adjustments to the ever-changing population. The health care system is now reforming to a prevention rather than cure model. With changes in the healthcare system and the population, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) developed a report depicting the need for nursing to be transformed in the areas of practice, education and leadership. I believe this report will have a strong impact on the future of nursing as it relates to expanding practice, furthering education and demonstrating leadership, all of which will enable a nurse to work at the maximum potential within their scope.…

Nursing students must achieve a comprehensive understanding of critical thinking in order to understand the nursing process. According to the English dictionary, compassion is defined as a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering. It would benefit many people to have this quality for their profession. One of the most important careers to have this quality for is nursing. As a nurse dealing with sick people one always has to do their best to make sure the patient is not only feeling better physically, but emotionally as well. Many people think that care and compassion is the same thing. Care is being there for someone while they are sick and taking care of them, while compassion is having a strong feeling of sympathy for that person as well as taking care of them.…
