Quality Physical Education
With all the ups and downs in education, I have always wondered what they really mean by quality physical education. The proposed definition of quality physical education is according to the standards for quality physical education established by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). A high quality physical education program includes the following components: opportunity to learn, meaningful content and appropriate instruction (North Carolina Alliance for Health). In this paper, I will focus on the quality physical education within elementary schools.
According to our reading material, a quality physical education program assists students in acquiring the skills, knowledge, and motivation to incorporate activity into their daily lives. The classroom teacher or physical education teacher (or both) develop a quality program through thoughtful, careful planning. The curriculum philosophy and content of the program are based on what students are to know and be able to do upon completion of the curriculum. Regardless of who plans and implements the curriculum, a quality program reflects the following characteristics: developmentally appropriate activities, skill and fitness improvement, promotion of physical activity, facilitation of learning, maximization of active learning time, indirect competition and cooperation, inclusion of many movement forms, integration of academic content, ongoing student and program assessment, compliance with federal mandates, and appropriate instructional time (Kovar, S.K., Combs, C.A., Campbell, K., Napper-Owen, G., & Worrell, V.J., 2009, p.168-174)....
