SOCI 220 – AMERICAN POP CULTURE

What is Pulp Fiction? I’d like to think it is one of the 5 best films ever made. Now why is that? You have every aspect that you are looking in a film. Great character actors, great theme, incredible soundtrack, and a story line that, when you leave the theater, you think to yours self, “oh sh**”. Now, all kidding aside, this is one of the best films ever made. Quentin Tarantino was actually quoted saying that it only took him 30 days to write this script, but it took 15 years to get it made. I’d like to think that this movie has such a strong relationship, not only to the course, but to everyday life. You have people, who on the outside, live their everyday lives, but, in a world we know nothing about, live a live some of us only dream of.
At the time, the movie was written like no other movie had ever been written. It had three different plots going at the same time, bring you back and forth, only waiting till the very end to tie everything together. For a film that was just over 2.5 hours long, it left you wanting more. It was not written in a chronological sequence the way traditional movies had been shot. Tarantino was able to tell stories within the stories to bring this work of art together.
You need to understand that at the time, John Travolta was on his way to being obsolete. He was doing horrible sequel films and just barely staying afloat. The truth is, he wasn’t even Tarantino’s first choice. Michal Madsen, who did Reservoir Dogs with him was the first choice, but things fell through, and he chose Travolta. The studio execs went crazy because of the sequels he was doing, but after spending a day with him, he saw how popular Travolta was, how crazy people still went over him; Tarantino knew he had to have him.
Why is this relevant? It’s a perfect example of how ones popularity, even after you have been doing sequel...
