Important qualities in public relations managers and specialists are Interpersonal skills. Because you work closely with the public regularly and must be able to relate, must be open and friendly. Another quality is having organizational skills; you must be able to manage several events at the same time. Problem solving is also very important. You must explain how the company or client is handling sensitive issues. You must use good judgment. This also where good speaking skills comes in, public relations managers speak on behalf of their company or organization. They need to properly explain the company’s position. Finally if you want a career in public relations you need good writing skills. Managers and specialists must be able to write well-organized and clear press releases and speeches. They must be able to grasp the key messages they want to get across and write them in a short, to get the attention of busy readers or listeners. In order to get a job in public relations most employers require you to have a bachelor’s degree in public relations, communication, or journalism. Also having taken courses in advertising, business administration, public affairs, public speaking, political science, and creative and technical writing are helpful, when applying for a position. Public relation specialists or managers are trained on the job. Training typically lasts between 1 month and 1 year, depending on the company. After gaining experience, public relations specialists write news releases, speeches, and articles for publication or plan and carry out public relations programs. After 5-10 years of experience you are qualified to become a public relations director. Most public relations managers and specialists work full time, and some work additional hours; one-third of public relations managers and specialists work more than 40 hours per week.
