Health care career diagram and summary
My health care career diagram and summary will focus on the psychologist working in an Outpatient Mental Health Clinic.
Psychologists are Doctors with a Ph.D. in Psychology. They are distinguished by

their specialty and can provide services in several specialty areas: research, developmental,

clinical, and neuropsychological, to name a few. According to Shi and Singh (2012), “They are

trained in interpreting and changing the behavior of people. Psychologists cannot prescribe

drugs; however, they provide a wide range of services to patients with neurotic and behavioral

problems.” (p. 447). They focus on emotions and thought processes.

A psychologist functioning in an outpatient mental health clinic can provide the following services: 1) Diagnostic evaluations
2) Psychological testing
3) Therapy
Psychologists play an integral part of the interdisciplinary team in the outpatient setting. By providing focused evaluations, they can aid other providers in diagnosing and treatment planning. Psychological testing services include: personality disorders, intellectual functioning, behavioral or addictive disorders, or screening test for organic brain disease. They provide and array of therapy services: individual, family, and group psychotherapy.

The impact of their roles to the outpatient mental health setting is valuable and needed for patient and family recovery. According to Cohen, Abraham, and Burke (2012), “Psychologists’ unique skill sets position them to play key roles in the recovery-oriented care revolution—as providers of direct care, developers of new evidence-based interventions, trainers, mentors, advocates, program developers and evaluators, public policy experts, teachers, and researchers.” (p. 30).
