In I/O psychology what do we mean when we say, “Science Practitioner Model?”
Science Practitioner Model- A model that uses scientific tools and research in practice of I-O Psychology. a. Research used to solve problems
b. Clear connection on between research and practice c. Application of scientific knowledge

What is “time and motion study?”
Studies that broke every action down into its constituents parts, timed those movements with a stopwatch, and developed new and more efficient movements that would reduce fatigue and increase productivity.

What is meant by the term “Scientific Management?”
-1915 - 1920: The era of “Scientific Management” - based on time and motion studies findings efficient movements to reduce fatigue and increase productivity”
ie. how long does it take you to do a specific movement, job, etc
What is meant by the term “Human Relations Movement?”
The results of the Hawthorne Studies ushered this movement, which focused on work attitudes and newly discovered emotional world of the work
What did title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlaw?
1964 Civil Rights Act: federal legislation that prohibits employee discrimination on the basis on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. (Intentional)
What did the Army Alpha and Army Beta test measure and for what purpose? Be sure to describe each test.
1915 - 1917: Army Alpha (test) - an adaptation of the Stanford Binet (tests to categorize people superior, average, insufficient, etc) used in WW1 to test 1 million recruits (reasoning - verbal, mental)

Army Beta (non-verbal reasoning/intelligence) - for illiterate (in english) [immigrants with accents or couldn’t read or write] use signs
Describe the Hawthorn Studies. Note: The studies not the effect. * Research done at Hawthorne, Illinois, plant of the Western Electric Company that began as attempts to increase productivity by manipulating lighting, rest breaks, and work hours. This research showed the important role that workers’ attitudes played in productivity.

What is the Hawthorn Effect? The effect not the studies.
Hawthorne Effect: the change in behavior that results from researchers/employers paying attention to workers
The Hawthorn studies revealed what four things? (Not in book)
1. Informal workgroups (people working together, but nobody assign them) 1. Importance of employee attitudes
2. The value of sympathetic supervisor (care, listen to needs, pay attention) 3. The need to treat workers as people instead of human capital
