For my Book Report I chose two books that correlated with one another. A major problem children face today is drug and alcohol abuse, it effects them developmentally in many ways, socially, physically, emotionally, and cognitively. These books cover the issues children face with this epidemic and how the some schools and society help this problem.
More than 50 percent of children will eventually experience some level of physical or emotional maltreatment at school. Disciplinary measures, such as paddling, verbal assaults, strip searches, massive drug screening, and confinement, are not only emotional and physical damaging, they undermine the very same institution they claim to protect (Hyman & Snook, 1999).
Being in the Education system, it is very important to know what is going on with students in the school. There could be anything going on with a student, which may be the reason why that child is acting out. It could be problems at the home, and the child turns to drugs and eventually will bring them to the school. Drug problems in the school are not all blamed on problems at home. As parents and teachers there is so much that they can do to decrease the drug use problem in the child's school. It not only has an effect on the children that abuse the drugs, but also on the students that are around them and even the teachers. We see so many of our schools turn bad due to drug related issues that no administrator wants to face. They rather give up on the school, rather than fight for whats theirs at any cost. I know that problems such as these are seen everywhere. Sometimes it is noticeable and other times it is not. I graduated from high school a few years ago, and I know...
