Parenting Styles and Development
Authoritative parents are both demanding and responsive. This type of parent monitors and imparts clear standards for their children’s conduct. They are assertive, but not intrusive and restrictive. Their disciplinary methods are supportive, rather than punitive. They want their children to be assertive as well as socially responsible, and self regulated as well as cooperative. An adult who was brought up with authoritative parents would cope very well with the changes taking place in their lives such as socially. A very big contributing factor to them coping well is that they have developed great communication skills. By this point in their life they know that if they need help or simply someone to confide in their parents would be there for them.
Authoritarian parents are highly demanding and directive, but not responsive. These parents provide well ordered and structured environments with clearly stated rules. Authoritarian parents can be divided into two types such as non-authoritarian directive, who are directive, but not intrusive or autocratic in their use of power; and authoritarian directive, who are highly intrusive. Coping with social changes might be an issue, because they will tend to keep their problems inside, not knowing how to reach out and communicate with someone else.
Permissive parenting style is another word for indulgent parents, who are more responsive than they are demanding. They are nontraditional and lenient, do not require mature behavior, allow considerable self regulation, and avoid confrontation. Indulgent parents may be further divided into two types such as democratic parents who are more conscientious, engaged, and committed to the child, and nondirective parents.   Life's changes will make this type of person very uneasy.
