Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an incurable skin disease that affects men and women around the world. Psoriasis has many different treatments to help the skin not flare up, but it is not a curable disease. It is also not contagious, but it is hereditary and that is how I inherited psoriasis, from my mother, Michelle. My mother had the disease ever since she was born, I however did not I was diagnosed with psoriasis my junior year of high school. Psoriasis can mentally, physically and emotionally hurt someone in different ways. Mentally psoriasis is a daily struggle in life. Having to deal with it in high school was not the best experience I had my four years there. My psoriasis is on my scalp and neck, so therefore it is clearly noticeable. I always had a very hard time dealing with it, I felt as if it took my beauty away from me. I would hear people talk about my psoriasis and that did not help my self esteem issues I already had in the first place. My mother said she had the same experiences and that many people would make comments but that I had to remember I was beautiful no matter what anyone said. Talking to my mom and interviewing her about psoriasis was helpful and I wish I would have done it a long time ago. During my interview my mother defined psoriasis as “beauty.” She said, “It is a physically draining disease, but it makes you and I different than others and that’s what I find beautiful.” I found this very
