* Chapter 1: “Foundations of Empirical Research” - pages 18 and 19 only * Chapter 3: “ Elements of Research”
Prior to reading, please click on the Key Terms Icon below to review this unit’s Key Terms. This will help you to better understand the concepts as you read. There are Key Terms games to challenge yourself and also a printable PDF version. Topic 1:

Your post should be at least 200–250 words in length and should extend the discussion of the group supported by your course materials and/or other appropriate resources. After you have submitted your initial post, review and respond to at least 2 of your classmates. Refer to the Discussion Board Rubric in the Syllabus for specific grading requirements.  The scientific method is a structured process that provides steps used by researchers to explore unexplained phenomena. There are specific steps that when followed reduce bias in the studies. Based on the reading, respond to the following topics below: Describe a time when you or someone you know based a decision using nonscientific thought (e.g., opinion or assumption). This should be about a paragraph.  Making a decision using nonscientific thought would be done without clear logical thinking coming into play at all. For example; if someone was looking for a house or apartment to rent. They would look for an apartment in their price range and rent the first one that came along. The person would not use any logical thinking during the process of renting a place to live, all they would be concerned with would be the price per month and how much it would cost to move in. For those who did not have enough money, often they wouldn’t even go and look at the apartment or try to talk the landlord into a payment arrangement prior to even looking, with the thought that why bother looking at the house/apartment if they can’t afford it. It is most likely that if a logical system isn’t used then they would end up in a place that isn’t safe or that the apartment or house would be dirty, parts of the home would need to be worked on with the possibility that soon after moving in something major could happen that the landlord would refuse to fix or refuse to refund their money too them, they would be stuck with a terrible area of town with a home that they hated and needed a lot of work to really feel like a home to them. This is why the scientific method should be used whenever possible since it gives a viable outline of how to obtain what someone wants in a highly logical manner that will protect them in all cases. The steps of scientific method are: * Observations

* Questioning
* Hypothesis
* Testing
* Explanation

* Unit of analysis appropriate to the problem being explored * The hypotheses to be tested,
* The research design
* Data collection methods
* Data analysis decisions have to be chosen accordingly.

Topic 2:
Throughout this course, many opportunities are available to post an initial response to a Discussion topic as well as to respond to your classmate’s responses. After you have completed the reading, and without reviewing your classmate's responses, post your initial response to the following Discussion. Based on the reading, respond to the following topics below: Write a second paragraph using the steps of the scientific method to explain how the person could have used scientific...
