Perusahaan OTOMOBIL National Berhad, or Proton, was incorporated in Malaysia on 7 May 1983 to manufacture, assemble and sell motor vehicles and related products including accessories, spare parts and other components. Proton produced the country’s first car, the Proton SAGA, and it was commercially launched on 9th July 1985 by the then Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the brains behind the national concept.

Proton evolved progressively from assembly to design and manufacturing, and emerged as the only full-fledged automotive manufacturer in the country in 1996. Proton product line-up comprised of SAGA, ISWARA, WIRA, SATRIA, PERDANA, PUTRA, SATRIA GTI, JUARA, WAJA, ARENA , GEN-2, SAVVY, SATRIA NEO, PERSONA and most recently the EXORA. The range of 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liter engine satisfy a wide spectrum of customers both locally and abroad. Proton main plant’s located in shah alam Selangor Malaysia. With and area of 923,900 sq meter, was originally designed for a capacity of 80,000 unit per year. In 1997, capacity increased to 230,000 unit per year, which instigated the construction of the medium volume factory next to the Shah alam plant.

The first model, Proton Saga was introduced based on the technology and parts from Mitsubishi Motors. Proton Waja, launched early 2001, is the first car model designed internally by Proton without any collaboration with others automotive company. Proton make a Partnership with Mitsubishi Motor corporation since the introduction of first proton model, Saga. After that in order to increase the technology use in Malaysia automotive industry proton has acquire of Lotus technologies in 1996 from ACBN. As a holdings, Proton gained an additional source of engineering and automotive expertise.
