INTRODUCTION

Death penalty has become one of the major issues in the world now. The recent case of Yang Wei Guang (18-year old Malaysian) being sentenced to death in Singapore due to drug trafficking offence has drawn the attention of many people. While there are many people who oppose the sentence, there are still people who support it when the topic is being discussed.

Death penalty is the pre-meditated and planned taking of a human life by a government in response to a crime committed by that legally convicted person. Currently in Malaysia, this punishment is applicable to drug trafficking, murder, acts of treason, waging war against Yang di-Pertuan Agong and terrorism activities. Only the High Court has the jurisdiction to do so Malaysia and the Ruler of the state or Yang di-Pertuan Agong can grand pardons to the crime committed. This form of punishment is the ultimate punishment of all because once carried out, there will be no reverse and there are a few ways which it is carried out such as lethal injection, gas chamber, electric chair, firing squad and hanging to death, depends on the country.

Some people may wonder why such harsh punishment is used because they see it as an inhumane act, ineffective against crime and vengeance which is unacceptable in a civilized society. However, others think that it's the most effective warning for all not to repeat the crime to avoid such tragic ending. As a result, this has lead people to come into a debate about the pros and cons, what their religion views on this topic and the alternatives for death sentence.

In conclusion, death penalty is supported and opposed by many people with different reasons. There are pros and cons for this penalty to take place and different religion has different saying about it. The society should really consider the alternatives for this punishment because killing is never the solution not to mention it will provoke vengeance. PROS OF DEATH PENALTY

Death Penalty Prevents Future Crimes

The most effective way to discourage people from repeating the same unlawful actions is through capital punishment, the punishment. For example, United Kingdom is one of the countries that have abolished death penalty. As a result, crime rate had increased rapidly through the 1970s and the 1980s in the country according to Machin and Meghir.

This shows that death penalty has the potential to deter crime even though there is no solid proof yet. So, to prevent serious crime such as murder, the society should use the strongest punishment available to deter it and that is the death penalty. Once this form of punishment is enforced, potential murderers will think twice before killing for fear of losing their own life.

Finally, the death penalty certainly "deters" the murderer who is executed. Vicious murderers must be killed to prevent them from murdering again, either in prison, or in society if they should get out. Both as a deterrent and as a form of permanent incapacitation, the death penalty helps to prevent future crime.

A Safer Environment For All

The second benefit we can gain from death penalty is living in a safer environment. To begin with it, first, it protects the innocents when the dangerous criminal is being executed instead of just locking them up for years.

There is a theory which suggests: "If a murderer is executed, there will about eight innocent people will live because they can't commit any other crimes if they are dead." Besides, the victims have more right to live their lives than people who are willing to murder someone.

Due to recidivism, there is no...
