Problem
“Consider an octagonal steel roof with an inscribed circle of diameter 50m.The steel members must be coated to ensure durability. Choose suitable material for such a roof and indicate the joining processes to be used during the construction. Give reasons for your choice of materials. Identify the Quality Assurance and Quality Control required for the joining and coating the steel members giving technical reference where appropriate. No structural design calculations necessary.”

It is assumed that this proposed roof will be used for public gatherings. And as such, safety and function ability are key aspects to the ultimate design for such a project of this scope and magnitude.

The essence of this report is to propose a truss steel frame single roof pavilion type roof with no center column. The entire roof will be self - supported. It is also assumed that proper construction standards were complied with for existing columns. And all related substructure works such as pad footings, ground beams and adequate backfilling, compacting, grouting to column bases etc.
Summarized Description Of Works
(i) Supplying, fabricating, shop painting, transporting and erecting heavy steel work in base plates, columns, beams, girders, rafters, purlins, girts, trusses etc.
(ii) Supplying, fabricating, shop painting, transporting and erecting light steel work in open web joists, bracings, bridgings, sag rods, sway frames etc.
(iii) Supplying, fabricating, shop painting, transporting and erecting miscellaneous steel work in anchor bolts, nuts, washers, brackets, inserts, kerbs, kickplates, sleeves, bearing plates etc.
