LAST 1010: Introduction to Latin American Studies I
Instructor: Corrie Boudreaux
Research Project Proposal
Country: Colombia
Theme: Welfare
Topic: Economic Growth in Colombia
Justification:
Colombia has been characterized throughout its modern history as a third-world country full of crime and violence, mostly because of its constant conflicts with the rebel guerrillas and the infamous drug war it has been involved in. Nevertheless, in the last fifteen years, Colombia has had an outstanding economical growth and performance, making it one of the most promising and successful emerging markets. Its economical stability and discipline has been such that it suffered no major impacts after the world financial crisis of 2007-2008. To explain this extraordinary phenomenon, I will give out various social, economical, geographical and cultural reasons that illustrate the importance of the governments, its institutions and civil society as a whole and how these contribute to a country’s welfare. My personal motivation to do is showing my classmates that there is more to Colombia than just drugs and death.
