The purpose of this article is to present 20 approaches special educators can implement with general educators to manage student behavior and increase academic involvement during independent seatwork.   This article was targeted at teachers, pacifically teachers of students with learning and behavior disorders.   This journal article was written on a scholarly level.   Some additional readings that the readers should be familiar with to understand this article are; Developing self-discipline and preventing and correcting misbehavior Bear, by George G. Bear, Albert R. Cavalier, and Maureen A. Manning; Applied behavior analysis for teachers (6th edition), by Paul A. Alberto and Anne C. Troutman; and   Increasing independent seatwork: breaking large assignments into smaller assignments and teaching a student with retardation to recruit reinforcement, which is a journal article by Monica A. Wallace, Elizabeth A Cox, Christopher H. Skinner (School Psychology Review , Vol.32,2003).   This is an empirical article because it reports research based on actual observations of a student with a behavior disorder.  
Students with learning and behavior disorders often lack sufficient self-control to complete seatwork activities and may be at greater risk for being distracted and lapsing into inappropriate behavior. Marcia Rock and Beth Thead composed 20 methods that teachers can use to help get students engaged in their work by using self-monitoring and self instruction. These 20 methods that they came up with are centered on cognitive- behavioral modification strategies to increase on-task behavior of students with a behavior disorder.   Some methods that the authors suggest are develop behavioral expectations, teach students to self graph, make use of effective praise, be mindful...
