PROJECT TITLE

TRAVELLER INFORMATION SYSTEM
(Real Time Road Traffic Mobile app)

Proposal/project submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the degree in Bachelor of Information Technology in Dedan Kimathi University.
Submitted on
4TH June 2013.

Abstract
This proposal is a presentation of an idea of a mobile application system to be developed as part of making the road transport industry mainly in big towns to be more convenient and efficient to the users.
The project is titled “Traveller Information System”. In many research reports, the term driver is used synonymously with traveler (Lynos, 2001). To be precise, drivers are a subset of travelers. When the term traveler or user is used in this thesis, it also means truck driver.
This is a system that acquire, analyze, and present information to assist road transportation travellers in moving from a starting location (origin) to their desired destination. The system receives traffic values, processes the values and information provided and disseminates real time information on request. The information will assist drivers in knowing the current status of the traffic in real time and to make intelligent decisions. The information will include: * Location of incidents * Weather and road conditions * Optimal routes * Recommended speeds and lane restrictions.
This system will offer the potential and ability to provide better solutions for city and urban traffic. The potential benefits include: * Reduced congestion in major roads in the cities * Increased safety * Efficiency * Management of capacity.

Commuters pose a challenge to town planners for various reasons, although they account for a small percentage of travelers. Commuting takes place in two faces: the morning rush hour and the afternoon rush hour. This means that during these phases, the transport system undergoes much stress because of the spike in the number of users. This can be credited to the fact that people live and work in different places and that there is a uniform work time in the country. Work starting at 8-9 a.m. and ending at 5-6 p.m., this means that commuters have some special needs and requirement in so far as traveling is concerned. So, they require speedy and dependent transportation. In addition to this, there is the growing need to keep the commuters informed…

Public expenditures on transportation have exceeded $680 billion annually over the last decade [2]. Even so, the vehicular networks are based only on the coarsest of information and single bits of data transmission. These systems all require a centralized traffic information centre (TIC) to process traffic information. The information is derived, typically from data collected from fixed detection stations installed in the roadways connected to the TIC via wired cable. Shortcomings of these centralized information systems include the following:…
