The Reluctant Workers

The three core skills that were most at play in the case study, “The Reluctant Workers were conflict resolution, organizational skills and management support.  
Conflict in project management is inevitable. The potential for conflict in information systems development projects is usually high because it involves individuals from different backgrounds and orientations working together to complete a complex task. The cause of conflict in team projects can be related to differences in values, attitudes, needs, expectations, perceptions, resources, and personalities. Proper skills in dealing with conflict can assist project managers and other organization members to handle and effectively resolve conflicts which can lead to a more productive organization as a whole.   http://www.umsl.edu/~sauterv/analysis/488_f01_papers/Ohlendorf.htm     Conflict resolution skills were highly needed in dealing with an project team of long term employees such as those that were assigned to Tim Aston’s team.   There were internal conflicts on the team such as staff leaving meeting so as not to miss car pool, personal plans that they were unwilling or unable to change in order to support the project and the denial of support from other functional areas to support Tim’s project.   A strong understanding of the organization and behavioral elements of his company is paramount to Tim’s overcoming the internal organization culture.   Based on the culture of the company Tim will need to recognize how to effectively plan and secure commitment from all the staff in order to manage the project.   Tim’s current effectiveness   in managing conflict   has been weak based on the case study, however, based on the discussion with the director of project management, he should have a better insight on the issues he must plan around.
