Smoking is a major issue because it's the main source of death on the planet higher than infectious disease, greater then obesity, greater than guns (Share Care). Each year tobacco is killing more than 6 million people around the world (World Health Organization). Three of the primary reasons youngsters smoke to look experienced, to resemble their companions, and to analyze (From the First to the Last Ash: The History, Economics and Hazards of Tobacco). Smokers are not killing themselves by doing it, but they are killing other people by increasing their risk of lung cancer and heart disease if people are exposed to other people smoking for long periods of time. For example, lung cancer increased by about 20-30% in human being's who regularly…
Smoking causes many health risks and is hazardous to your life. Smoking is responsible for several diseases, such as cancer, long-term (chronic) respiratory diseases, and heart disease, as well as premature death. “Over 440,000 people in the USA and 100,000 in the UK die because of smoking each year. According the US CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), $92 billion are lost each year from lost productivity resulting from smoking-related deaths”(MNT).…
The most important in people’s lives is health. To protect people’s health, people, themselves need to block all bad situations that can happen for their health. One of the situations that they can protect themselves is “Say no to smoking”. Smoking is bad for people’s lungs. Besides, some people have asthma and they really do not like the smell of cigarettes. Therefore, every place that has lots of people such as schools and hospitals, smoking is definitely prohibited. The more people around the more they breathe the smoke. Schools are the place that students come to study. They do not want to come there and worry of their health. Smoking can make the school‘s reputation come down without they notice it. Every school needs to convince students and people to follow the rules so that everyone can have a good health and a nice place to study.…
First of all, smoking affects a smoker physically and mentally. Nicotine in cigarettes or cigars is a highly addictive substance. The tar and carbon monoxide in cigarettes increase a smoker’s risk of heart diseases, brain tumors and lung cancers. According to North East Valley Division General Practice, a risk of a stroke is 25 percent likely to occur in male smokers. The nicotine increases cholesterol levels in smokers’ bodies. Men who smoke are also ten times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers. Smoking is harmful to the respiratory and circulatory systems. It causes high blood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and diabetes. A person’s appearance is changed when smoking. A smoker’s skin, nails and teeth are stained and his breath is stink like smoke. For female smokers, their cervix, and uterus are vulnerable to cancer. They might also develop fertility difficulties. For pregnant female smokers, it incurs premature birth, miscarriage and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Inhalation of tobacco smoke by nonsmokers has been found to increase the risk of heart disease and respiratory problems. On top of it all, smoking affects our next generation. Children who are…
Secondly, social problems caused by smoking have become one of the important issues for the society. Smoking also affects the life of them who do not smoke but are exposed to someone smoking nearby. This is called passive smoking. This has a very serious effect on the health of the individuals getting exposed to smokes. There has always been a lack of concern towards the effects…
When something starts to validate an individuals health rights, issues will be brought up. Smoking is something that America has discovered more and more about over the years and has found increasing numbers of facts about diseases and problems associated with it and the pollution it emits. Anyone who passes by a smoker can inhale the excess smoke and potentially be affected. Slowly, second hand smoke is something we are starting to become more aware of and businesses around America are starting to crack down on banning smoking in their facilities. College campus' have not been hit by this new ban, though, and continue to let students crowd around their doors to get a smoke in between classes. Because the students tend to crowd around the doors, students entering or exiting the building inhale the smoke. Personally I am an individual that does not smoke so I really do not have any desire to incur any of the dangers that are associated with it. Also because college campuses are where students spend the majority of their day, avoiding contact with it is almost impossible. According to the US Dept. of Health, second-hand smoke has much higher levels of tar, nicotine, and carbon monoxide than the direct smoke a smoker inhales. "The…
With that being said, if someone is smoking and other people are near, then the second hand smoke can increase the risk of others getting lung cancer. The polluted air in smoking sections, at different restaurants for example, carries over to the non-smoking section quite often. About 126 million people are exposed to the drifting of secondhand smoke in the air per year. Smoking can cause allergic reactions; it also increases the risk of people with asthma to have an asthma attack. Not only does public smoking harm others, it also harms the one smoking.…
Smoking has been shown to be dangerous to health of the people. Heart disease, bronchitis and lung cancer have all been linked. A further issue is that smoking costs governments millions of rands because of the large number of people who need treatment in hospitals for smoking related problems. There is also concern today about passive smoking. Recent research has shown that non-smokers can suffer health problems if they spend long periods of time among people who do smoke.…
Research by Dr. Kari Jo Harris, Associate Professor from the University of Montana concluded that students who smoke would be more likely to have increased absences, tardies, lower grades and attention span. If avoidance strategies of people addicted to tobacco are half as strong as tobacco researchers say they are, student enrollment will suffer as a result of the complete outdoor smoking ban. Particularly…
Cigarette smoking has been known as the most important health risk. Smoking greatly increases the chances of obtaining lung cancer. Individuals who smoke are thirty times more likely to get or even die from lung cancer. Cigarette smoking does cause many different cancers such as nose, mouth, throat, larynx, bladder, pancreatic, stomach, blood and bone marrow cancer. And the more years a person smokes the higher the risk. Smoking does suppress functions of the immune system, causing coughing, wheezing, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis and upper and lower respiratory tract infections. Living healthy lifestyles almost has no effect if you are a cigarette smoker. “Cigarettes contain more than 4000 chemical compounds and at least 400 toxic substances. When you inhale, a cigarette burns at 700°C at the tip and around 60°C in the core. This heat breaks down the tobacco to produce various toxins” (“Smoking – health risks”). Not only does smoking alone affect your health, many non-smokers suffer from cancers formed by cigarette…
There are many reasons why smoking in public should be banned. The three main reasons to ban smoking in public are because of the health risks, offensive smell, and environmental risks that are the cause of cigarette smoke. Secondhand smoke is smoke from a cigarette, cigar, or pipe that is involuntarily inhaled, especially by non-smokers (The American Heritage Stedman’s Medical Dictionary, n.d.). In many public places smoking is allowed and is not fair because non-smokers are exposed to chemicals that can harm them internally and externally. Children for example, are chronic victims of secondhand smoke. The inhalation of cigarette smoke that can harm people nearby is called passive smoking (Pros Vs. Cons, 2007, p.1). Also cigarette smoke can make non-smokers agitated by the smell of cigarette smoke, which is not very pleasant. Also the environment is tainted by the hazardous chemicals, which can cause permanent scars on the earth. For the most part, smoking in public should be banned to help decreases its negative affects.…
College campus’s are in need of an area for those who smoke to do so in a safe environment. Right now the only place for us to go is the unsafe streets surrounding the campus. Although smokers choose an unsafe habit, it is their right to do so in a safe area. It is the college’s duty to provide this safe place.…
Smoking is contagious. It spreads like wild fire from one person to the next. Students may find themselves being peer pressured to smoke because it’s ‘’the cool thing to do’’, or ‘’everyone is doing it’’. Especially since our economy is in a recession, many people are stressed out, and vulnerable. A group of people smoking around a non-smoker creates a bad environment for the non- smoker, and they may be influenced into smoking. It’s no mystery that cigarettes are extremely addictive. If a student caves to peer pressure just once, they could become a slave to the habit for the rest of their life. When I left my English 101 class the other day, I witnessed a 9 year old boy skateboarding up to a student who was smoking and the boy asked him if he could have a ‘’cigg’’. The student found him amusing and told him he shouldn’t be smoking but, not before handing him a cigarette. With the ban of smoking on campus, it will greatly reduce these situations from happening.…
At the NOVA Alexandria campus there has been a debate whether NOVA should ban smoking in all areas in campus. This debate is very critical because there are a lot of smokers in Alexandria campus. They may restrict smoking in certain areas but they can’t prevent students to smoke in the hall campus. If NOVA will ban smoking in all areas, that will create hate behavior between smokers and non-smoker students. Smokers argue that they have the right to use campus facilities equally as non-smokers. On the other hand, supporters for the ban in NOVA Alexandria campus said that smokers harm other students with smoking smell. They argue that there are a lot of reason to ban smoking related to health issue . In my opinion NOVA should not ban smoking in all areas in Alexandria campus. Nova could restrict smoking in some area but not all the campus.…
According to a UC Office of the President report, “only 7.9 percent of UC students had smoked within 30 days of a 2010 study compared to 16 percent of college students nationwide.” It means majority of UC students are non-smoker. Non-smokers are exposed to second-hand smoke in public area such as campus. It can be easily seen students and staff smoking in front of classes or library. It is totally understandable that smokers have to smoke regularly. Smokers have right to smoke, but smokers cannot harm non-smoker. Just like smoker has a right to smoke, I think the non-smoker also has a right to be refrained from smoke. In front of classes and entrance of library are places that has highest traffic in campus. Library and most of classes have only one entrance. If one smoker light up on these highly trafficked places where many students passes by. Non-smokers are indiscriminately breath in smoke whether they want or not. It takes away non-smoker’s right to be refrained from smoke. Government banned smoking in public areas such as restaurant and bars and to smokers, this school banning smoking on campus looks similar with what government did. I think school banning smoking just like…
