When values and ethics are referred to, most people think of what is right and wrong and how it affects a person in their daily life. Having Professional values and ethics can be very useful for a career and can have multiple benefits.
We aren’t born with our beliefs about what is right or wrong in the world. Our values are shaped over time by life experiences, culture, teachers, parents, friends, clergy, television, and books. Values are our ideals, beliefs, and expectations about how we interact with our world. Our values determine how we treat other people and the choices we make in our lives daily. These concepts can change during our lifetime when we receive new input or have new experiences. What we believe can come into question when we have a moral conflict with a family member, friend, or someone in the workplace. There are times when our values can conflict with someone else’s values, yet sometimes there is no right or wrong, only differences in our beliefs. Our values are deeply internalized and can have an impact on our behavior professionally.
A professional individual or organization needs to have a code of ethics by which to conduct business. It is essential to have a strong set of ethics to build trust with clients, coworkers and peers. Professional ethics are the guiding set of rules and principles that determine the manner in which an organization, institution, or profession conducts business. People are drawn to other people and businesses where he or she can find compatible values and ethics. A person would want to believe that he or she can trust the person or company who he or she is working with.
