Professional Values and Ethics
Professional values and ethics are the foundation for any successful business enterprise. Values often represent an individual’s principles or beliefs that shape one’s definition of right and wrong. They are considered to be the framework of decision making. Values are generally influenced by society, family and religious affiliations. Ethics, on the other hand, are the rules or standards that govern the conduct of individuals in a social group, culture or professional setting (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2007). The following pages will examine in some detail the complexities and intricacies of values and ethics along with their impact on career success.
There are three factors that may be applied to professional values and ethics such as, academic honesty, professional integrity and lastly, personal values. According to the article, The Role of Integrity within the Academic Community put forth by Empire State College; “there are five fundamental values that characterize an academic community” (Empire State College, 1999). These values are as follows: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. In other words, individuals have to ensure that they are providing an atmosphere that allows for a healthy exchange of ideas. Also, an individual must be mindful of another’s intellectual property and give credit where credit is due (Empire State College, 1999).
Professional integrity also plays a tremendous role in a professional organization. For example, professional values and ethics will set a standard for how employees and their superiors behave in the work environment; furthermore, the choices that are made within a person’s everyday life will have a definite and direct impact on that person’s success in their career.
