Abstract
The term ethics means knowing the difference between right and wrong and sticking to those principles. A person’s ethics is the standard that the person lives by and holds himself to at all times no matter what the situation is. Ethics are usually vowed to uphold a certain level of Values are instilled in people through their upbringing. This is usually taught by the guardian(s) that raised the person and the values are normally what the guardian has deemed important enough to instill into the child. Ethics and values are very important and should not be taken lightly. These traits are especially important when complicated situations arise.
Values and Ethics
According to Webster dictionary, ethics is the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group or culture (2010). Ethics refer to the standards of conduct which one should behave based on moral duties and virtues. Ethics are derived from principles of right and wrong, in order to apply this definition to certain decision- making it is necessary to specify the nature of the moral obligation or behavior. There is two aspects of ethics; the first involves the ability to discern right from wrong, good from evil. The second involves the commitment to do what is right, good, and proper. Ethics is an action concept; it is not simply an idea to think and argue about (Ciulla, Martin, & Solomon, 2007, p.1- 5).
According to Webster dictionary, values are beliefs of a person or social group in which they have an emotional investment either for or against something. A person’s values are demonstrated by their actions and the result of their actions (2010). The terms "values" and "ethics" are not interchangeable.
