The prescription of heroin
Eugenia Oviedo-Joekes of the University of British Columbia wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine stating that she and her team of doctors have found a new way of treating heroin addictions with the use of prescription diacetylmorphine (active ingredient heroin) vs the prescription of methadone.
Oviedo-Joekes and her stuff studied over 200 addicts in her home of Canada, her study showed that 54% of users who got methadone stayed in treatment for a year and 88% of users that got diacetylmorphine shot stayed also. Those users who got the diacetylmorphine cut back on illicit drugs by 67%, compared to 48% of users who got methadone.
The users who received the diacetylmorphine spent at least 45 minutes per their visits in the clinic to check for side effects, the study also showed that three quarters of the users said they had engaged in non-drug-related illegal activities in the previous month.
Oviedo-Joekes study showed that the cost of heroin treatment is less than $10,000 per year. Whereas persons who got out of treatment, their cost to society was over $50,000 a year, this includes their trips to the emergency room, doctor visits, court visits, police and jail. North America only has about a million heroin addicts.
The prescription of heroin is now recognized in some European countries as the optimal treatment for patients for whom options are running out and in whom methadone maintenance has not worked, and it keeps the user in contact with drug services," Virginia Berridge of the University of London wrote in a commentary [continues]
