Production of materials
2. Some scientists research the extraction of materials from biomass to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels 2.1 discuss the need for alternative sources of compounds presently obtained from the petrochemical industry Petrochemical industries are such that use petroleum as a raw material, for example the use of fossil fuels for the production of polymers, fuels and lubricating oils. Chemicals present in the petrochemical industry include petrol, aviation fuel, diesel, candle wax, ethene, lubricating oils, kerosene, polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, polystyrene and many more. Society is dependant on the petrochemical industry for a vast amount of products and services; however the petrochemical industry is based on fossil fuels which are considered a non-renewable resource. I t is estimated in the next 100 years the world will run out of fossil fuels. Thus it is imperative than an alternative source for raw materials be found to support the worlds growing demands. 2.2 use available evidence to gather and present data from secondary sources and analyse progress in the recent development and use of a named biopolymer. This analysis should name the specific enzyme used or organism used to synthesise the material and an evaluation of the use or potential use of the polymer produce related to its properties. A biopolymer is a naturally occurring chain of chemicals (polymer) from a renewable source, which is usually from micro-organisms or plants. An example is cellulose from plants. A commercially produced biopolymer is polylactic acid STRUCTURE, CHEMICAL EQUATION, SOURCE OF MONOMERS ENZYME USED TO SYNTHESIS BIOPOLYMER
