Procter & Gamble: From Top to Bottom – A Consultant’s View
Procter & Gamble, commonly referred to as P&G, is an enterprise today, that 177 years ago was merely a family-run candle and soap business. However, through innovative thinking, a creative marketing strategy and partnerships around the world, P&G has become the largest consumer goods company in the world. (P&G - A Company History, 2006)
William Procter, emigrated from England in order to care for his sick wife, Martha, in a better environment. Procter first worked in a bank, but using his previous experience as a candle-dipper, he complimented his income to help pay off debt. Starting as a one-person operation, Procter took full advantage of the local meat packing industry’s oil and fat by-products. With his product, he began manufacturing, selling and delivery of candles to all the local customers in the area. Around the same time, Procter met Olivia Norris, who soon became his fiancé. Olivia Norris turned out to be the daughter or prominent Cincinnati candle maker, Alexander Norris. (Our History — How it Began, 2009)
James Gamble, on the other hand, immigrated to the United States in 1819, with his family, as a mass of people were leaving Ireland. The family was headed toward Illinois, but during their journey, Gamble became very sick. They made a stop in Cincinnati for medical care and by the time Gamble got better, the family decided to stay. After he was fully recovered, Gamble took on an apprenticeship as a soap maker. Not too long after he started soap making, he met and married Elizabeth Ann Norris, Alexander Norris’ second daughter. (Our History — How it Began, 2009)
This paper will look at a number of areas where organizational recommendations are relevant and potentially promising. Taken into consideration will be the firm’s current strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and
