The Problem in Haiti
Haiti is an unfortunate nation and remains underdeveloped because of frequent natural disasters. Haiti has been considered one of the poorest countries in the world for quite some time. The transportation infrastructure and agricultural sector have been devastated by tropical storms and today they are almost nonexistent. The widespread deforestation makes it almost impossible for small scale subsistence farming to exist. Haiti relies on international assistance for sustainability, which has left 80% of the population living under the poverty line (Nutritonal Landscape Information System and County Profile, 2010). Since 2000, there has been several partnerships created to boost the economy and the country and until the earthquake in 2010 Haiti was on the way to pulling its population out of poverty.
Nutrition Concerns of the Most Vulnerable
Of the millions of children die, each year before reaching their fifth birthday, because of malnutrition and diarrhea.   Their deaths are preventable and the main causes are due to dietary deficiency and inadequacy. Haiti has been in a very fragile state for quite some time 60% of children 6 months to 59 months of age suffer some form of Iron deficiency as well as 46% of women (Nutritonal Landscape Information System and County Profile, 2010).   Vitamin A supplementation coverage is less than the target coverage rate 80%, and 10% of households use iodized salt (Nutritonal Landscape Information System and County Profile, 2010).
Diarrhea is caused primarily by contaminated water, food, and unsanitary living conditions. Additionally, the two illnesses promote each other. When children have diarrhea, they are unable to absorb the food they consume and repeated episodes of diarrhea often lead to malnutrition. Additionally, when children are malnourished, they have weakened immune systems, and are more susceptible to diarrhea (WHO 2010).
