Oral communication implies communication through mouth. It is a vital part of life in relationship, education, and careers. It includes individuals conversing with each other, be it direct conversation or telephonic conversation. Speeches, presentations, discussions are all forms of oral communication. Oral communication is generally recommended when the communication matter is of temporary kind or where a direct interaction is required. However, not all of us have a high confidence in oral communication. Sometimes, they know the answer and know how to explain it but lack of confidence in itself makes the speech or the presentation become worst and not perfect. The main purpose of an oral presentation is to present subject content in an organized, concise and effective manner to a live audience. When delivering an oral presentation, certain challenges require ingenious techniques to engage into an impromptu interaction with the audience members. Profiling the audience could be difficult but it may be worth your time to make the effort. There are many advantages that we will gain when we know the real skills on how to give the perfect oral communication. When we know the skills, it will have proximity with the audience. It also helps immediate interchange of the opinions when the audience understand what was presented by the presenter. It provides instant feedback and involves participation of all present. There are a few mistakes that commonly faced in oral presentation. For example, use of inappropriate phrases or expressions which could disrupt audience attention. Curse words and off colour remarks are never appropriate in a speech. You will offend someone when you use bad language and one thing you don’t want to do is offend anyone in the audience. The minute you offend them, you lose them as a listener. Using jargon and slang just confuses the audience and makes the audience feel inferior or frustrated. Every profession has its’ own language. Lawyers talk about quid pro quo and depositions. Teachers talk about magnet schools and inclusion. Doctors talk about scripts and consults. Americans use phrases that don’t translate well or don’t mean anything in other languages. For example, a Catch-22 situation, getting to first base, it’s between a rock and a hard place, or what’s up? It is your responsibility as a speaker to use words and phrases that the audience will understand, comprehend and retain. Another reason why is this happen because the speaker itself fails to rehearse. We should never, ever read a speech. Create an outline, study the outline, and then speak naturally and from the heart.
