Case Study – Problem Employee

We often hear about the employers that don’t treat employees well; but you know, it sometimes works the other way as well. I had a call from a gentleman who was at his wits end as to what he could do with an employee that he has had on his payroll now for 5 years. This employee is running the entire show! He’s a bully and the employer is to the point that he is actually afraid of him – not in a physical sense – but in the sense that he’s afraid to stand up to him because – oh no – heaven forbid – he may quit!
The employer has completely lost control of this fellow because he never had the courage to set any boundaries or expectations from the start and his leadership has been extremely inconsistent. So, how did this happen, you may ask? The background: The business owner has a small restaurant. He and his wife and brother-in-law opened the restaurant about 7 years ago. The business started to grow and he brought in the employee in question to help them out. At first, the employee was really good and the owner gave him more and more responsibilities, to the point that he felt fairly comfortable in leaving him to open up on occasion and actually assist with the business decisions, etc. The business continued to grow and he hired a few more people, mostly part time, to work during lunch and dinner times.
After a few more employees were hired, the original employee (we’ll call him Joe), started to exhibit some less than desirable behaviours by coming in late; opening the doors and then within 15 minutes, he would go out back to have a smoke break (virtually leaving the business open without anyone inside, which the owner found out by coming in a couple of mornings right after Joe and finding the place empty); talking on his cell phone right in front of customers (putting the customers on ignore while he chatted away on the phone); and when the

    From the perspective of six pillars of character, if I were Cindie, I would be honest with Lyndell and tell him what’s been bothering me. Hopefully, by keeping quiet about him leaving early, he will feel that I’m trustworthy enough to tell me his problems, whether it’s drinking or any other problems he is facing in his life. I might be able to help him or at least come up with some ideas to help him. I will also respect him more if he can open up to me and is willing to fix his problems.     Naturally, no one wants to work with difficult or negative people. For me, I will consider termination if all else fails and if it has reached the point that it is already necessary. As part of the management team, it is important to handle them effectively. We cannot ignore the problem or his negative behavior. Ignoring the situation is a wrong solution as it could result to a progressive problem. It is important to take action as soon as the negative behavior pattern becomes evident, it will only escalate when left untouched. There are cases wherein the employee is unaware that his actions are already known by the management. There are also cases that the employee is totally unaware of his negative behavior. In these cases, the manager needs to research on the issue and talk to the person armed with accurate data and examples. He needs to take this person into a conference room or office, away from others and calmly address the issues. Helping the problematic employee to get back on track is a more appropriate solution. Besides, I believe most employees will recognize the negative behavior and will at least attempt to turn it around especially during tough economic times when unemployment is high and finding a new job is difficult.     First of all, the history of the confrontation between the patron and the hotel 's front desk employee was clouded with expectations and assumptions. For example, the patron made a reservation for a room by using the hotel chain 's national reservation center. This center, in turn, is obligated to give the information to the individual hotels so that the hotels can then honor the reservations accordingly. Unfortunately in this example, the patron 's request and approval for a king bed was not relayed from the reservation center to the hotel. As a result, the hotel employee did not have the information that the patron assumed he had received. This assumption resulted in a breakdown in communication between the hotel employee and the patron, which then created hostility on the part of the patron and defensiveness on the part of the employee. The hostility felt by the patron was partly due to past experiences with hotel employees and the negative outcomes of those experiences (Pfeiffer 12). These past experiences created a situation where the patron did not really listen to what the employee was saying (Pfeiffer 13). Instead, he only heard that there was a problem ("just like there was last time").
