Abstract

This paper explores an experiment conducted by psychologist Dr. Philip Zimbardo.   Dr. Zimbardo is a professor at Stanford University, who conducted an experiment on the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard.   The experiment was based on setting up a simulated prison and then analyzing the effects of the institution on the behavior of all that participated in the experiment.   During the exercise, Dr. Zimbardo, the Stanford Professor, divided the volunteers into prisoners or prison guards.   The experiment was to be conducted over a fourteen-day period in which the study of prison life could be examined.   This paper examines Dr. Zimbardo’s experiment and the effect it had on the volunteers, as well as my own personal experience after viewing the slide show of the experiment. It is proposed that additional exercises should be conducted on potential prison guards, to educate them on the affect their actions could have on promoting human values rather than destroying them.
