This assignment seeks to take an in depth look at a company named Below the Line Marketing or BTL Africa, it is a Zimbabwean marketing company that offers below the line marketing services to any other firms or individuals that seek to use their services. I interned at this company over the summer of 2012 during the months of May - August
The organization is small and employs only 10 office staff that work for the company full time. When the need to do below the line marketing activities such as in store promotions and road shows, the company has over 100 part time employees on retainer that are paid for the number of days which they have worked and have no steady salary. The amount they are paid varies from job to job. The company is run by two directors namely, Vimbai and Themba they founded the company two years ago and have been growing it ever since. The company mainly employs young adults who have just graduated from university thus making the average age of the company somewhere between 28 and 27 years of age.
As the organization is so small, there is a short chain of command for the permanent workers with orders coming directly from the directors and very little room for delegation as everyone is more or less at the same level of authority. However when it comes to delegating tasks to the outsourced workers, the chain of command grows a little longer, the companies directors receive a request from a company seeking their services, then the directors pass on this task to the in-office workers, who’s task it is to then find, allocate and delegate work to the non permanent workers, these non permanent workers report directly to the in office staff and have little or no communication with the directors, very similar to larger firms.
When it comes to how decisions are made the company, has a decentralized style of management with lots of decision making control lying in the hands of the employees, however the directors are the ones who decide which jobs to take on, the span of control is 10 as these are the employee’s who report directly to the managers/directors.
There is little departmentalization, as there only exists three offices in which similar tasks take place, bar the secretary and the warehouse security guards, who have separate tasks from the rest of the office. The company does have a big manual with all the rules and functions of the organization but it is unrealistically big and not many employees get through the first third of it, not to mention that there is only one of these manuals. In terms of liquidity the company is not vey liquid as most of it’s cash or revenue stems from creditors who owe them money, given the current economic environment in Zimbabwe a lot of these creditors are faulty and tend to make payments late, which results in many of the companies staff not being paid on time.
The Influence of technology
The influence of technology in the organization is minimal, as all the office staff are equipped with either a laptop or use a desktop PC, all reports are done and processed on the computer, all results that need to be sent out to the company which has enlisted BTL’s services are also done on computer. There is a warehouse where the goods that are used for route to market sales are kept, but the stock counting is done manually and there isn’t even a forklift to remove and add items to the warehouse. Due again to Zimbabwe’s current economic crisis, the capital to pay for items such as forklifts or any other expensive technological machinery is not readily available.
This has positive traits and some drawbacks.
