This assignment is intended to provide evidence of a candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the principles for duty of care in health, social care or children and young people’s settings. By completing all tasks within the assignment, the candidate will provide evidence that meets the Learning Outcomes and assessment criteria for Unit 054, Principles for Implementing Duty of Care in Health, Social Care or Children and Young People’s Settings.


There are three tasks to this assignment.

Task A – Short Answer Questions

Candidates will explain the following:

* What duty of care means in children and young people settings (Ref. 1.1) Duty of care means it is your duty to care for the children, to protect them from any danger and harm. The younger the children, the more you have to watch over them as they are more vulnerable as they are more dependable on you whereas, the older ones are not so vulnerable but still need to be watched over until they have become adults.|

* How this contributes to the safeguarding or protection of individuals (Ref. 1.2) With safeguarding you need to carry out risk assessments making sure there are no potential hazard left lying around to endanger the children or may cause any accidents or spreading of viruses. Depending on the age and development of each child, boundaries should be set that could upset other children and if broken they will know the consequences of their action. Observations and assessments should be carried out so that you will know if the child is following expected pattern and if not futher action can be taken with parents and other professional. Knowing and being aware of signs if a child is being harmed and to follow appropriate procedures. |

Task B - Complete table

Candidates will complete the following table with three examples.

Task C - Short answer questions

Candidates will explain the following:

* The main points of agreed procedures for handling complaints in children and young
people’s settings (Ref. 3.1)
Any complaints that is made should be talked over with the manager who will deal with it accordingly. If it is not resolved there and then a written complaint is then requested or a form will be filled in, signed and dated by the person making that complaint with the person in charge. All complaints are stored in a separate file designated for this purpose. The manager will then investigate and try to come to some sort of agreement. If not a mediator will be called in.|

* How they would respond to a complaint (Ref. 3.2)
Any complaints made will be dealt with confidentially. As the manager comes to the end of the investigation she will then request to meet with the ones making the complaint to discuss the outcome where it will be resolved at this point and the summative points are...
