Pride and Prejudice is a book that was written by a woman named Jane Austen. It was written in England between 1796 and 1813. All books are written for a purpose and a theme. This novel is no different. This book is about a girl named Elizabeth and a man referred to as Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth was one of five daughters and her parents were trying to find men to marry their daughters off to. They did this by going to many social events, such as balls and dances. Elizabeth’s oldest sister, Jane, falls for a guy named Mr. Bingley right away after he comes to her town. He brings Mr. Darcy along with him. However, Mr. Darcy is not a social person. He does not enjoy the events or the dancing. His attitude during these events was very sour. Elizabeth decides from the very beginning that she does not like Mr. Darcy. But, no matter how hard she tries she cannot quit thinking and talking about him.

One of the main characters in this novel is Elizabeth Bennet. She is a very intelligent, mature woman. She has a great deal of honesty and lively wit. Though, not everyone is perfect and Elizabeth does have a downfall. Her downfall is that she has a tendency to make swift judgments about people and the judgments are often wrong. This book is the story of how she makes the wrong assumptions about Mr. Darcy in the beginning and later voids all of them and falls in love with him in the end. Now, that Mr. Darcy is a different type of guy. He comes from a very wealthy family and has wealthy friends, such as Mr. Bingley. When Mr. Darcy is first introduced into the story he comes across as arrogant, rude and harsh. He talks about how he refuses to dance and how there is no one pretty enough to take up his time. He even goes as far as to talk bad about Elizabeth while she is within earshot. Elizabeth immediately talks to her friends and sister about how she will not give him her time. This, however, will change!!

There is a drastic change throughout the book by these two characters. At the end, Elizabeth and Darcy decide to put down their judgments that they made in the beginning of one another. This movement shows to be a good thing. For example, Mr. Darcy visits Elizabeth and says, “I have fought against my better judgment, my family’s expectations, and the inferiority of your birth by rank and circumstance. All these things I am willing to put aside and ask you to end my agony”. That shows that his feelings toward her have changed and that he is able to lay down his pride. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth once and she rejects it because she is not at the place where she feels like she can lay down her pride and prejudice. Yet, Mr. Darcy continues to prove his loyalty to her and it therefore provides evidence to her that he is her ideal match. They end up marrying one another and living happily ever after.

When an author writes a novel, he or she almost always writes with a purpose. Every story has a different purpose for being written. When Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice, her purpose was to show that ifit is meant to be it will happen. Even though Elizabeth pushed Mr. Darcy away and people thought they didn’t belong together, it happened because it was meant to be. Jane Austen also wanted to prove that first impressions and judgments are not everything. She also needed to persuade people to go with their feelings and not what the people around them had to say.

In conclusion, this novel has a great purpose and Jane Austen really words it well in order to achieve her purpose. This book has great values and lessons to be learned. Everyone should read it and learn from it. |Novel Assignment Grading Rubric...
