Glossary of terms
Obesity- abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health Cholesterol- a waxy, fat like substance that occurs naturally in all parts of the body Body mass index- is a calculation that uses height and weight to estimate how much body fat one has. By dividing one’s weight by their height squared. Metabolism-
Hereditary- the genetic transmission of characteristics from parent to offspring Atheroma- mass of yellowish fatty material that forms in and beneath the inner lining of arterial walls Hypertension- high blood pressure
In this Chapter the Researcher will outline the Background, the Objectives, the Hypothesis, Topic Justification, the Limitations and the Plan of Action of the study. 1.1Background of the Study
The Research is to be carried out in the low density suburb of Hillside in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. It is located about seven kilometers from the Central Business District, to the Southern side of the city Centre. Hillside suburb is a community of people of different races, who are mostly of sedentary life styles that is they earn high incomes and most live luxurious lives. 1.2 Research Objectives
The Researcher intends to find out about the general life-style of the Hillside residents, which will include their hobbies, daily routines, diet and health history. 1.2.1 To determine the nutritional value of the diets they live on 1.2.2 To investigate if they are aware of the Recommended Daily Allowance of Nutrients and water relative to age groups and occupations. 1.2.3 To find out their mode of transport and the exercises they do.
1.2.4 To visit Hillside Premier Hospital, the suburb’s local Health Centre and get a picture of Health matters relating to the suburb residents by interviewing Health Centre personnel. 1.3 Hypothesis
Most people in Hillside consume calories than they use and end up being obese. 1.4 Topic Justification
The Researcher chose this Topic because most people are not aware of their health condition and complications which are associated with their diet and life-styles. The Researcher noted that in today’s modern society, a lot of people are suffering from non-infectious diseases like hypertension, cardio-vascular disorders and diabetes which are all linked to obesity. The Researcher’s aunt suffers from a combination of hypertension, cardio-vascular disorders and gall stones and so wishes to advise other people on common causes. 1.5 Plan of Action
