In President Obama’s speech, his main argument is that the United States government needs to fix the broken immigration system. He wants to give immigrants more opportunities to be able to gain citizenship. Obama advances his argument by using the three appeals ethos, pathos, and logos. We can do better than that”. This is an example of ethos because it shows his good character and that he is a moralistic person. It allows the audience to connect with him as an actual person, not just the President.
One example of how Obama uses logos to further his argument is when he speaks about how he has increased border patrol and when he speaks about all the intelligence the United States id gathering about immigrants. Obama says “border patrol has 20,000 agents…double from 2004…the fence is complete…we have forged a partnership with Mexico to fight the criminal organizations”. This is an example of logos because it shows that Obama understands the issue and that he is trying to fix it not only in the U.S but also in Mexico. He is showing that he will not only fix inside the U.S but outside as well. Obama shows that he knows what is going on and is fixing it every way possible.
When Obama speaks about Jose Hernandez, he uses the appeal of pathos. He speaks about Jose growing up in the California fields picking cucumbers and strawberries to becoming an astronaut. It shows how an immigrant can achieve the American Dream even when the odds were against him. It shows the audience, that Obama believes that immigrants can reach their dreams in America.
