Preserving Nature vs. Reshaping Nature
PRESERVING NATURE VS. RESHAPING NATURE

Critical analysis of recent floods in Uttarakhand

______________________________________________________________________________

“The environmentalist goal of ‘preserving nature’ unavoidably conflicts with the requirements of human life: Man 's basic means of survival is to reshape nature to serve his ends, to take the raw materials of his environment and use them to produce values. This requires "touching" nature, not leaving it untouched”

Most of the time, we find environmental bodies at a logger head with businesses/government, with both parties accusing each other of being opportunist and unfair. In the absence of any credible source, our opinions are based on media reportage of accusation/counter-acquisition -- the debate between environmentalists and businesses seems to be perpetual.

To discuss the above statement, I have attempted to carefully study the recent debate around Uttarakhand floods and done my own analysis based on the discussion in the classes.

The horrific incident, which unfolded just a few days back, caused massive human tragedy at a staggering scale. As per officials, more than 1,000 lives were lost and other losses estimated to be above 3000 crore. However, as per eye witnesses, over 30000 people including sadhus, villagers and laborers, lost their lives and most of them remain uncounted, as no one claimed for them.

Before coming to any conclusion, I have listed claims by environmentalist calling the incident a ‘man-made disaster’ due to eco-insensitive nature of our politics and also the counter claims by the government/analysts, completely refuting the acquisition by dubbing the incident as the ‘most unprecedented natural calamity’.

Man-made disaster due to eco-insensitive nature of politics: Environmentalists

Environmentalists believe that the indiscriminate development in hill towns and along

In his critique, “The Trouble with Wilderness or Getting Back to the Wrong Nature,” William Cronon argues against the romantic conceptualization of nature that a great portion of the environmentalist movement has embraced. Subsequently, Cronon revokes the Romantic and even quasi-religious notion that wilderness spaces are separate from those inhabited by man. He argues that by eliminating the divide in perception between the human constructs of the natural world and the civilized world, man will be encouraged to take more responsibility for his actions that negatively impact the environment. In prefacing his conclusion, he writes, “Home, after all, is the place where finally we make our living. It is the place for which we take responsibility,…

Although a lot of effects have manifested in today’s time, there’s only a little effort exerted to lessen these harms. First, critics pointed out that the nature is an ever-evolving entity. As it is ever-evolving, whatever we do to it – may it be good or bad – actually doesn’t have any bearing because it is destined to change the nature that we once knew. Another thing that critics pointed out was that humans are part and parcel of nature itself. Critics say we are one with nature. If this is the case, it is possible for ourselves to be blamed for whatever experiences nature we have and we can be held liable because we are nature.…

The debate about business and the environment is polarized. A group of business academics asserts that "it pays to be green." That is, they argue that firms can increase profits if they set ambitious environmental targets, lobby for tighter not looser government regulation, and make the environment the central organizing principle of their businesses. In this view, it is clear that the environmental problems society confronts are significant and that firms can and should profit from contributing to their solutions.' A second group of executives and business academics, emphasizing that firms exist to serve their shareholders.…

Ecological restoration is the improvement of an ecosystem, restoring it back to its original state. It is the essential part of human relationship with nature. Restoration is the main point to bring back what was lost in nature, and as Light said, it was more than just that in ecological restoration and it could be seen as a helpful way of reforming a relationship to nature (Rose, 2016). Value, the culture of nature is human relation with the natural world, in other words, restoration. Throughout this paper, I will be discussing the key arguments against ecological restoration in relation to other philosophers, Light’s main arguments in support of ecological restoration and restoring environment philosophy.…

But what pinches to my heart is that when the right time comes for finding facts, faults and weakness those leads to this big tragedy; all will forget about it. No one will ask question from Bureaucrats, Planners, Organizers, Governments or even from his/her own consciousness, Why this happened? Why precaution was not taken? Where lays the actual faults? No one will bother to find out the truth so that repetition such incidents can be stopped or controlled, Precautions and preventive measures can be taken. In 2008 I visited HESCO Dehradoon, One of their activist strongly opposed the Govt. policies, Practices followed by development planners, Industrialists and even common peoples. He predicted this disaster at that time only, saying “We are playing with very sensitive balance of Himalayan Environment. Said One day Hiamlaya will roar and will bring his wrath upon us and That day We will be numb and will not be in position to control the disaster”.…

As far as I am concerned, people should learn to how to get well on with nature. Whether man can triumph over nature isn’t important, but Man should not always try to make use of nature to serve for themselves. Instead of it, people should respect nature. Only through a better way to live in harmony with each other, for man and nature, can people live a better life in the…

In June 2013, a multi-day cloudburst centered on the North Indian state of Uttarakhand caused devastating floods and landslides in the country's worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. Though parts of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in India, some regions of Western Nepal, and some parts of Western Tibet also experienced heavy rainfall, over 95% of the casualties occurred in Uttarakhand. As of 16 July 2013, according to figures provided by the Uttarakhand government, more than 5,700 people were "presumed dead." [3] This total included 934 local residents.[4]…

For years, the rapid increase of the piligrims, have made it possible to build many illegal guethouses. Not only this, around 421 hydropower projects were sanctioned out of which 10 are already constructed. The hydropower construction involves drilling and digging though the earth's surface. The Himalayas are young fold mountains which are formed by the movement of the tectonic plates. So these mountains hold loose sand and is prone to landslides. Many trees were cut to pave the path for roads. Over 17 hectares of forests were cut. Thus, loosening the soil even further. Taking this as a situation, the cloud burst that occured on June 16th washed away all the soil downwards, thus loosening the foundation of amny buildings that were in and around the region of the river banks. This made the houses and building stopple. This created a havoc and catastrophy in Uttarakhand.…

    Man And Nature

Ever since man has come on the Earth, he has brought nothing but destruction to nature. Since they started use of toxic materials and oil, there has been a lot of pollution. Man has always wanted to live and travel comfortably but he did not know was that he was destroying nature. The cause of nature getting destroyed was pollution, oil spills, cutting down trees, sound pollution, killing animals for their skin and other purposes and the list goes on and on. He did not think that it would finally affect him in a very bad way. Because of man, many fantastic creatures are extinct like the Tazmanian Tiger, The Dodo Bird, The golden bear, etc. and animals that are going to be extinct such as the Great White Shark, the sperm whale, the golden bald eagle, the Serbian tiger and the African elephant. Scientists had predicted about global warming and greenhouse effect many years before but man did not listen. He went on polluting more and killing animals and cutting down more trees. This spoiled the environment even more which probably caused the bad weather, earthquake and tsunami in South-East Asia and its neighbours. Scientists have predicted that if the environment keeps getting worse, there will be drastic change in the Earth's environment in the 2020. The tsunamis and the earthquakes are just warning from the Mother Nature. Man still has a chance to take corrective measures or else it will be very late. Nothing will change if the people will not change. People should stop throwing wrappers, plastic glasses, etc. People also spit on the roads and pollute the environment in which they live. But he does not realize that this action of his will only destroy the delicate balance of nature. If the nature takes matter into their own hands, it will destroy man by natural calamities such as tsunamis, earthquakes, flashfloods, storms, volcanic eruptions and a beginning of a new ice age. The natural calamities that are increasing day by day are a wakeup call to mankind. We…
