Weegee

1) First Slide: Weegee background
a) Real name is Usher Fellig
b) He was born in Poland in 1899 and came to NY in 1909.
c) His name was changed to Arthur Fellig when he moved with his family to NY
d) Nickname: Weegee
(1) Couldn’t really find anything about his nickname but some say it was given to him by police.
e) Picture: Arthur Fellig with a speed graphic camera.
(1) The timing had to be just right because each exposure required the photographer to change the film sheet, focus the camera, cock the shutter, and then press the shutter.

2) Second Slide: Street photography
a) Street photography is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, and political conventions.
b) Street photography uses the techniques of straight photography in that it shows a pure vision of something, like holding up a mirror to society.
c) It gives the audience an experience of all walks of life.

a) Car crash

4) Slide 4: Weegees photography process
a) Carried all his supplies in the back of his car so that he could quickly develop his pictures then go and sell them to newspapers and magazines.
b) He used the gelatin silver print process
c) He also had a police radio in his car that allowed him to get to crime scenes quickly, sometimes even beating the police to the crime scene.

5) Slide 5: Milwaukee 1948
a) This picture depicts a man who was hit a woman to the ground, and his friend is keeping him from going over and beating her more.

6) Slide 6: Gunman Killed by Off-Duty Cop at 344 Broome Street
a) On the night of Feb. 2, Andrew Izzo and accomplices tried to hold up the Spring Arrow Social & Athletic Club, near Bowery. Shot by an off-duty cop, Izzo staggered down the street then fell dead on his face; his gun skidded across the sidewalk.

a) A woman was hit by a car and killed
