Prepaid Energy Meter
Prepaid Energy Meter using GSM

INTRODUCTION:

This project is based on VTU syllabus. The proposed system is based on ATMEL 89S52 µcontroller which is in our syllabus. For doing this project we use some of the software like ❖ Embedded C for programming the application software to the microcontroller. ❖ Protel schematic software is used for designing the circuit diagram for this project. ❖ Express PCB software is used for designing the PCB for this project. (Since PCB making is a big process and involves lot of machineries which are expensive, we are going to outsource this to the manufacturer.)

ABSTRACT: Every month we can see a person standing in front of our house from Electricity board or water Board whose duty is to read the energy meter/water meter and handover the bills (electric or water) to the owner of that house . This is nothing but meter reading. According to that reading we have to pay the bills. The main drawback of this system is that person has to go area by area and he has to read the meter of every house and handover the bills. The Electricity board and Water authority has to give privileges for these people to do their duty monthly. The thing is, Government will not appoint any particular persons for this duty. The people working in these boards will go on a particular day and do their duty leaving all their pending works. Due to this, their work will be delayed and this is great loss for government. To overcome this drawback we have come up with an idea and this idea will help the government and it will save the time of the employees working in these boards. The aim of the project is to automate the prepaid billing of energy meter and water meter. In this project the front end is User friendly and the employees can work on this software with minimum knowledge of Computers. Employees can read the meter by sitting in the Office. For front end designing Java is used.

    Smart Grid Summary

It is a reality that existing traditional model of electricity generation and distribution is very old and not efficient. Technological advances applied in every sector nowadays but not in electricity generation model. As a result of high demand, the traditional model has become too costly, and now oil costs increased, and especially coal-fired generation has contributed to environmental pollution. And traditional model has big problems in terms of security since some big horrendous experiences with electricity deregulations and blackouts. A Smart Model is defined as distributed generation, renewable energy, renewable portfolio standards and the Smart Grid. This model responds to concerns about energy, environment and security. Distributed Generation aims to make production locally instead of large regional heavy grids for transmission and distribution. Solar cells and wind tribunes will take the place. The goal in changing the production type to small scale is, economic efficiencies by removing producers from the grid, environmental benefits , energy efficiencies , energy security advantages from terroristic attack, catastrophic accidents.. Article also put emphasis on pricing electricity. Traditional model is based on an average cost of electric generation no matter using it in a peak demand time or a regular time. Peak time electric generation cost is more expensive than regular hours because existing system has older and inefficient generation plants which are normally not used but being used to fulfill high demand in peak hours and also distribution cost is high because of high demand for electricity creates transmission congestion. Smart pricing provides marginal cost will give a more comfortable using style to consumer and help to conservation of energy. In last part of the article express with mathematical calculations that installation of smart meters is highly cost-effective than adding new generation and transmission capacity to existing electrical…

This paper presents a single phase digital prepaid energy meter based on two microcontrollers and a single phase energy meter IC. This digital prepaid energy meter does not have any rotating parts. The energy consumption is calculated using the output pulses of the energy meter chip and the internal counter of microcontroller (ATmega32). A microcontroller (ATtiny13) is used as a smart card and the numbers of units recharged by the consumers are written in it. A relay system has been used which either isolates or establishes the connection between the electrical load and energy meter through the supply mains depending upon the units present in the smart card.Energy consumption (kWh), maximum demand (kW), total unit recharged (kWh) and rest of the units (kWh) are stored in the ATmega32 to ensure the accurate measurement even in the event of an electrical power outage that can be easily read from a 20×4 LCD. As soon as the supply is restored, energy meter restarts with the stored values. A single phase prepaid energy meter prototype has been implemented to provide measurement up to 40A load current and 230V line to neutral voltage.Necessary program for microcontrollers are written in c-language and compiled by Win-AVR libc compiler. Billing process is very complex; it involves recording of billing payments for every household, producing of water bill statements, determining of which household needs to be disconnected, producing of official receipt, aggregating of records, the aforementioned procedures are very time-consuming. Because also the system is not automated, there are possibilities of redundancy of records, inability to produce whose household have already paid their bills, inaccurate details, unsecured for it’s very prone for the record to be misplaced or else lost, and inability to retrieve data from the customer that may affect the performance of the business and the customer satisfaction.…

The current electricity infrastructure in the Unites States consists of one way “communication” between the electric company and the homes receiving the electricity with the communication coming from the electric company to the homes. The current electricity infrastructure in the United States is more than 100 years old and because of this fact, it is outdated resulting in a great lack of efficiency. There is no way for the electricity company to obtain information from the individual homes pertaining to actual usage. Smart grids allows for two way communications between the electricity company and the homes allowing both electric companies and homes to operate more efficiently. This two way communication will allow home users to cut costs by efficiently utilizing energy. Smart grids will also allow the electricity companies to raise prices when the demand is high and lower prices when the demand is low. Mirroring the price advantage, smart grids will allow the user to dictate the usage of appliances that may have a significant impact on their utility bills. Knowledge of the user’s consumption will also help in making decisions that the electricity company can use to be more efficient. Smart grid technology is the evolution of the current electricity infrastructure that will continue to evolve if accepted.…

    Talking Energy Meter

    • 453 Words

The purpose of this project is to build a KWH (Kilo Watt Hour) meter that can alert the users with voice messages. An Energy meter or KWH meter is a device that measures the amount of electrical energy supplied to or produced by a residence, business or machine. Electricity is a clean, convenient way to deliver energy. The electricity meter is how electricity providers measure billable services. The most common type of meter measures kilowatt-hours. When used in electricity retailing, the utilities record the values measured by these meters to generate an invoice for the electricity. They may also record other variables including the time when the electricity was used. The idea behind this project is to construct the Energy Meter that is useful for illiterates and the busy people who cannot concentrate on the energy meter readings because of their busy schedule. This system helps the users by alerting them about the peak loads (max energy consumption), power status (ON/OFF), billing status etc. The voice alerts could be in any local language. Hence this system can be used across the world. The typical voice alerts are “Over load”, “Pay electricity bill”, “Turn off the lights” etc. This system also consists of a LCD display that continuously displays the energy meter readings in real-time. This consists of Real-time clock for calculating the average, max and minimum readings with respect to time. This information is display on a LCD display. This can be achieved by the use of microcontroller unit that continuously monitors and records the Energy Meter readings in its permanent (non-volatile EEPROM) memory location. Microcontroller also drives the voice module to play the voice messages based on the energy meter readings. This system also implemented for a single push button based load control for turning ON or OFF the loads.…

Science is basically "passive" observation of the universe as it exists to generate knowledge. Engineering is making use of that knowledge to meet human needs by creating machine, systems, process and technologies that have not previously existed. Design and manufacturing are the synthetic part of engineering practice. Manufacturer has received a lot of attention recently for very good economic reasons.…
