Position Paper- Rich have the responsibility to spend more on aid to the global poor
In this essay I will argue that the rich have a duty to spend more on aid to the global poor. The words “rich” and “poor” will be used interchangeably with developed countries and developing countries respectively. In addition, for the purpose of this essay, aid is defined as technical, economical or political support to the needed people or country. I strongly believe that rich have a duty to help the poor because they owe a hidden debt to them as the rich have been using (in a way, exploiting) human as well as natural resources of developing countries since the colonization period. Moreover, I believe that it is a moral obligation for the rich to help the global poor. I will present these two arguments before responding to an important objection that as aid is said to have counter-productive impacts on the poor, why the rich have to provide aid.
It is the duty of the rich to help the global poor as they owe a hidden debt to developing countries because they became richer by using the resources of the developing countries and hindering the development of the poor from the colonization period up to now. There are five points to be made here. First, most of the developing countries are gifted with more natural and human resources than western countries (Population, Natural Resources, and Environment, par. 1). Second, during the colonization period, western countries took away the resource and wealth of the developing countries, made products out of it, marketed them in the colonized countries by using force and they become richer by doing so (Dr. M.S Kolokosa, Les.2).
