Popular Mechanics by Raymond Carver
In Popular Mechanics the author, Raymond Carver, uses painstaking details, numerous symbols, and an unusual title to convey the universal theme that not all relationships end happily. Carver uses all these things to his advantage. He brings out the theme of this depressing, but truthful story. Many couples these days experience the same thing that this one in particular went through. "Early that day the weather turned and the snow was melting into dirty water." Carver starts off the story in this way. It is obvious that something bad is coming or has even already happened. The tone is grim from the very beginning and it also gives us an idea of what is to come. The weather outside is dark, "But it was getting dark on the inside too." This leads us to think that the relationship might already be doomed. The details Carver provides us bring to light so many images. These images help us piece together the big picture; this relationship is doomed. Both, the man and women's attitudes toward each other also make us think that they are not very happy. They just seem to not care, about each other but they do care about their child. One would think that they would be mature enough to not act like children for the sake of their own child. However, they do not seem to care. Their anger must be past the point of being rational. She won't even let him take the picture of his child. He wants the baby, but so does she. They argue and quarrel like children. The author wants us to know, that they are far from happy, as is the baby. Carver certainly lets us know this in extreme detail and without this his story would not be the same. Raymond Carver uses so many symbols in this story that it is tedious to name them all. The most important would have to be the baby itself, the picture of the baby, the flower pot, and the weather. All of these symbols provide a specific meaning to the story and its theme. The baby is something they both love but yet it is not the solution to all

Kate Braverman’s “Pagan Night” is a story about a young woman named Sunny who departs with her boyfriend after their band breaks up. They are living in a van and have an unplanned child. Sunny attempts to give it a name, however she is unable to do so. Throughout the story she has urges to kill the baby and make her boyfriend content as he had not wanted this child in the first place. This story is reflective of the struggle many young mothers face today when they face unplanned pregnancy. Sunny and her boyfriend especially were not expecting Sunny to become pregnant and when she does that is when everything in their lives messes up. They are both really young to be parents in that they haven’t even figured out who they are as individuals and what they both want to do in life, essentially basic things that are crucial to have been figured out before one decides to start a family. Both Sunny and her boyfriend do not seem to have sufficient amount of resources to provide simply for each other and this baby will become a burden upon them and their fun, easy going and chill life-style. Also, it doesn’t even seem like they know or understand each other so well either. For instance, they both have a very poor communication system in that Sunny is not able to comfortably express her complete thoughts and concerns with Dalton. Every time asks her what she is thinking about her response is always “Nothing” (page 502). She does not find it important to share her concerns with Dalton, which is unhealthy for a relationship especially parenthood.…

In the story The Universe Itself was Laughing author Loren Eisley undergoes a liminal process where he goes from respecting nature to learning that nature is a microcosm of the universe. Eisley’s cognitive was altered when he encountered a fox puppy who was digging through a piles of untidy trash. He realizes that the fox, an anomaly to his previous belief of viewing nature through a “upright human arrogance”, represented the universe in the liminal stages of creation. The author believed this because he said that the fox was “swinging in some fantastic fashion around to present its face, and the face was so small that the universe itself was laughing” much like the liminal stages of the universe. Also, he says that animals and people of nature…

To some people a baby can be the best thing that ever happened to them, but then there are others who have decisions to make. They will go through an important stage in any relationship, the make it or break it stage. The two stories that I will be analyzing will be “Desiree’s Baby” by Kate Chopin and “Hills like White Elephants” by Earnest Hemingway. In both stories the characters found out how babies can be a deciding factor in a relationship, and that’s what I will be focusing on.…

Writing a short story is like writing 5 stories in one, because the writer leaves gaps in the story that the reader will subconsciously fill in. Because of that the story will be very different from one reader's perspective to the next. In Raymond Carver's short story "Popular Mechanics," there is no clear ending. He also makes the story pretty vague by leaving out quotation marks, not telling the reader who is saying what, giving no background, and only allowing each character to say a few words at a time. The story as whole leads up to the ambiguous ending that leaves each reader with their own interpretation of what Carver's story is actually about. Carver lets the reader take the story into their own hands from the very beginning by permitting the reader to naturally decide who is really at fault for the family falling apart. The biggest debate about how the story ends is by these two sentences Carver surprises us with at the end, "He felt the baby slipping out of his hands and he pulled back very hard. In this manner the issue was decided." Some may say that the baby was being pulled on by both parents and eventually the baby's arm is ripped off, then deciding who keeps the baby. However, I could not disagree more.…

    The Love of My Life

In the short story "The Love of My Life," two teenagers make one bad decision and their lives are changed forever. The author, T. Coraghessan Boyle, wrote the story based on an actual news story that had occurred a few years back. The author does a great job of making the relationship between Jeremy and China seem so wonderful and almost innocent, that it is hard to be angry with them. The two characters in the story, Jeremy and China, are young and are head over heels for each other. The very first line of the story is all it takes to make the reader realize that these two youngsters share the true meaning of love, "they wore each other like a pair of socks." All of that changes when the two find out that China is pregnant. Instead of properly handling their situation, they have the baby and dispose of it in a dumpster at a motel. Although the story has a very upsetting plot, you can't help but feel some sympathy toward the characters.…

The last paragraph of this essay is my favorite by far, “…in their beautiful voices out of my childhood. To hear his father’s name echo as his own name and to enjoy it leaves the reader with the same sense of happiness.…
