Political correctness: pro et contra.
Political Correctness (PC) was introduced in the 1980s. PC was introduced in an effort to increase tolerance for a diversity of cultures, race, gender, ideology and alternate lifestyles. PC also tried to compel everyone to avoid using words and behaviors that discriminated or was offending to various groups of people. I feel that political correctness is appropriate in this generation and it is good. It is a sort of paraphrasing, to substitute offensive words with milder ones that have the same meanings. The following are a few examples; "fat" is replaced with "differently sized" while "disabled" is replaced with "physically challenged." Straight talk that is to the point nowadays can offend and insult people. With political correctness, we can do away with much of the negative effects. For example, domestic engineer is a more polite term for housewife. Most of political correctness is about gender and race. First, in the past, men had more power than women. They had better jobs and were better educated, so we had lots of words that were offensive to women, for example, chairman, fireman, and mailman, etc.. These words now have changed to chairperson, fire worker, and post deliverer. Another example is that if women had a job in the past, they would earn less money than men even if it was the same job, but now it is equal. I guess I am a little old school when it comes to this kind of thing. I believe in calling a janitor a janitor. He is not a “sanitation engineer”. Engineers are individuals who went to college and graduated with degrees after four or more years of demanding schoolwork. In my opinion, that is a title that should be earned by hard work. Nevertheless world’s mass media and even everyday’s life is inconceivable without Political Correctness. It has become the essential part of our communication culture and who knows what it would be if PC disappear.
