Policy Analysis I Paper

There are many issues that are in the criminal justice system that deals with federal, state, and local. This paper will discuss how a current issue in the federal, state, and local affects public policy pertaining to the criminal justice system. The issue that been on going is illegal immigrants in the criminal justice system.

Public policy has many different definitions. The most basic definition of public policy is "what governments do, why they do it, and what difference it makes" (Marion & Oliver, 2006). Another definition for public policy is a projected program of goals, values, and practices. There are four types public policy: distributive, redistributive, regulatory, and morality policies. Distributive policies are where it provides benefits to everyone. There are no qualifications on who receives the benefits but, it more of an administrative thing. Redistributive policies are where the benefits are taken away from specific groups. This policy is has a drawback because it only benefits the selected and not everyone. The next policy is regulatory policies. This policy is where its to ensure that people do the right thing in a certain way. The policy is designed to protect the public at large by establishing the conditions under certain various activities that can or can not take place. The only drawback to the policy is that it becomes over bearing on the system and to complex to enforce. The last policy is morality policy. This policy is where it deals with "first principles." These principles are based on individual morality, which determines what is right and what is wrong (Marion & Oliver, 2006).
